Volleyball wins thrilling league openerWINGATE, NC -- Catawba College rallied from a two games to one deficit to take a South Atlantic Conference volleyball win over host Wingate University this evening at Cuddy Arena on the Wingate campus. Catawba outlasted Wingate three games to two (33-35, 32-30, 24-30, 30-18, 15-13). Catawba is 8-3 overall (1-0 SAC), while Wingate falls to 9-3 overall (0-1 SAC). Catawba bolted to a 7-0 lead in game five before Wingate rallied to tie the game at 10 on a kill by senior outside hitter Ashley Minton (Dallas, TX). The Indians rallied the troops as sophomore outside hitter Hope Miller (Newton, NC) ended the match with back-to-back kills. Wingate won the first game 35-33, despite the fact Catawba led 29-25. The game was tied 10 times before the Bulldogs prevailed. Catawba streaked to a 10-1 lead in game two, but Wingate rallied for a 24-22 lead on a kill by freshman middle blocker Dezari Munjoy (Long Beach, CA). The two teams endured 12 ties in game two. The Bulldogs never trailed in game three, taking a 22-9 lead on a Munjoy kill. Catawba made things interesting, cutting the Wingate lead to 27-23 before the Bulldogs settled down to take the third frame. Catawba turned the tables in game four, breaking a 1-1 tie and never looking back. The Indians did not trail in the fourth game, outscoring the Bulldogs 8-2 to end the game and set the stage for the exciting fifth game. Munjoy led the Bulldogs with 21 kills and eight blocks (one solo, seven assists). Minton was not too far behind with 16 kills and five blocks (five assists). Wingate freshman setter Sarah Davis (Yanceyville, NC) had 40 assists. For Catawba, Miller had team-high totals of 19 kills and 30 digs. Four Catawba hitters had double-figure kills. Indian sophomore outside hitter Crissi Harrison (Hickory, NC) (like Minton a Western Carolina transfer) had 13 kills, senior middle hitter Rachel LaRoche (Wilmington, DE) had 12 kills and sophomore middle hitter Elizabeth Hewitt (Hickory, NC) had 11 kills. Indian senior setter Lettie Wilkes (Williamsport, MD) had a whopping 53 assists.
