Sands Homers In Dodger Spring Training Game
GOODYEAR, AZ -- Former Catawba baseball standout Jerry Sands is one of several non-roster players invited to the L.A. Dodger major league spring training camp. Sands made the most of his opportunity on Tuesday, hitting a homer for the lone Dodger run in a 2-1 loss to Cleveland.
Sands launched his home run off Cleveland pitching prospect Kelvin De La Cruz in the seventh inning that tied the game at 1-1.
"He's impressive, and I like what I've seen of him," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said of Sands. "He just has to go out and play, like everyone else. For a big guy, he also runs good and is good defensively."
Below is a link to an off-season feature by the Dodger organization on Sands, along with another link to a highlight video from his first half in Single-A at Great Lakes. The last link is to a ESPN Los Angeles story on Sands.
