Reid's Steal And Buzzer-Beater Sends Men's Basketball Into SAC Tourney Semis

ANDERSON, SC – Dominick Reid (Charlotte, NC/Cannon School) recorded a steal in the closing seconds and hit a layup at the buzzer as seventh-seeded Catawba stunned host Anderson 85-83 in the opening round of the 2011 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Men’s Basketball Tournament on Wednesday night at the Abney Center.  Reid’s bucket capped an 11-1 run over the final two minutes for the Catawba Indians, who improve to 13-14 and advance to a Saturday semifinal at Catawba Valley Community College in Hickory, NC.  The second-seeded Trojans fall to 18-11.

Reid finished the night with 30 points and connected on 7-of-13 from behind the line to lead the Indians.  Freshman Keon Moore (Colerain, NC/Bertie, HS) hit a trio of three-pointers down the stretch and finished with 19 points.  Justin Huntley (Mooresville, NC/Mooresville HS) rounded out the double-figure scorers for Catawba with 17 points.

Anderson pulled out to a seven-point lead early in the second half, but three-pointers by Reid, Moore and Lee Martin (Mt. Airy, NC/N. Surry HS/Hargrave) kept the Indians close.  The Indians pulled even at 71-all on a dunk by Huntley with 7:27 left.

Leading 75-74, Nick Trull connected on a three-pointer to spark a 7-0 run that gave the Trojans an 82-74 lead with just over three minutes to play.  Moore hit two three-pointers around a free throw by Brandon Young to cut the Catawba deficit to 83-80 with 1:11 remaining.

After an Anderson miss, Moore hit his third three-pointer in a span of 1:10 to tie the game at 83-all with 38 seconds to play.  The Trojans held for the final shot and called a time-out with six seconds left.  Reid made his steal with three seconds to go and drove the floor to hit his shot as time expired.  The win avenged last season’s last-second loss to Anderson in the NCAA II Southeast Regional Tournament.

Anderson jumped out to a quick lead and built its advantage to 34-17 on a basket by Trull at the 7:19 mark of the half.  Baskets by Moore and Reid started Catawba’s charge back.  Reid hit consecutive three-pointers to pull the Indians within 41-40 inside the final minute.  A steal by Kelvin Drakeford (Charlotte, NC/Cannon School/Barton) led to a last-second bucket by Reid to give the Indians a 42-41 lead at the break.

Trull had a huge night for Anderson, finishing with 27 points.  He hit on his first 10 shots, including seven from behind the arc.  Kevis Cornwell added 15 points, with Young chipping in with 13 points and six assists.

Both teams had the hot hand from long range.  Catawba shot 51% for the game and went 12-of-26 (46%) from behind the arc.  Anderson canned 59% and hit on 11-of-21 (52%) of its three-pointers.  Catawba held a 27-26 edge on the boards and committed one less turnover.
