Baseball Grabs Second Straight Over Nationally-Ranked Pacers
AIKEN, SC -- Senior Josh Hohn (Greensboro, NC/S. Guilford HS/N. Greenville) hit a tie-breaking home run in the seventh and visiting Catawba held on to notch its second straight win over nationally-ranked USC Aiken with a 6-5 win in baseball action on Wednesday afternoon at Hernandez Stadium. The Catawba Indians improve to 16-5, while the 17th-ranked Pacers fall to 13-6.
Hohn’s one-out homer in the seventh followed a single by Ryan Bostian (Kannapolis, NC/S. Rowan HS/Montreat) and gave the Indians a 4-3 edge. Chris Dula (Troutman, NC/S. Iredell HS) delivered a key two-run double with two outs in the eighth to pad the lead. Dula’s hit knocked in Keaton Hawks (Lexington, NC/E. Davidson HS), who had walked to open the frame, and Julio Zubillaga (China Grove, NC/Carson HS), who was hit by a pitch with two outs.
USC Aiken pulled a pair of runs back in its eighth, but JJ Jankowki (McMurray, PA/Peters Township HS/Miami,OH) struck out a pair in the ninth and got a fly out with the tying run at third to post his first save. After a leadoff single by Stephen Carmon and a passed ball, Jankowski struck out the next two batters. Carmon stole third and Kyle Rice walked with two outs, but JJ Loker flied out to left to end the contest.
The Pacers pushed across single runs in the first two innings to take an early lead. Josh Miller homered in the first and Teddy Leverett had a sacrifice fly in the second.
Brett Underwood (Greensboro, NC/SW Guilford HS) got Catawba on the board with a single in the fourth and the Indians tied the game when another run scored on a double play ground out. Aiken answered that run on Matt Key’s ground out in the fourth to go on top 4-3 to set the stage for the late Indian rally.
Joe Kase (Palm Harbor, FL/Tarpon Springs HS/S. Florida CC) pitched five innings for the Tribe. He allowed three runs on five hits. Clay Watson (Davidson, NC/N. Davidson HS) and Corey Norman (East Bend, NC/Forbush HS/Surry CC) each tossed scoreless innings with Watson earning the win to improve to 2-0.
USC Aiken got close in the eighth, scoring a pair of runs of Wil Huneycutt (Locust, NC/W. Stanly HS), but the senior got out of the frame with Catawba on top. Thomas McLeod made the start for USCA and struck out five in his two innings of work. Steven Spire took the loss in relief, allowing two runs on three hits over three and a third innings.
Underwood collected two of the seven Catawba hits. Rice had three hits for the Pacers and scored twice. USCA had a dozen hits, but left 10 on base. Carmon and Zachary Kilday each added a pair of hits.
