Lomascolo Tosses Shutout Ball Into The Eighth As Baseball Opens Newberry Series With 5-0 Win
NEWBERRY, SC -- Sophomore Nick Lomascolo (Mooresville, NC/Lake Norman HS) allowed only four hits over seven and two-thirds innings as visiting Catawba opened a weekend series with a 5-0 win over Newberry in South Atlantic Conference baseball action on Friday night at the Smith Road Complex. The Catawba Indians improve to 17-5 overall and 9-1 in the SAC, while the Wolves fall to 12-10 and 6-4.
Lomascolo pitched into the eighth and kept Newberry off the board to improve to 4-1. The lefty surrendered just four singles. He walked four and fanned nine. Clay Watson (Davidson, NC/N. Davidson HS) got the Indians out of mild trouble in the eighth, striking out Robby Scaggs with runners on second and third to end the frame.
Garrett Furr (Gold Hill, NC/Mt. Pleasant HS) got Catawba on top with a leadoff home run in the second. Chris Dula (Troutman, NC/S. Iredell HS) and Josh Hohn (Greensboro, NC/S. Guilford HS/N. Greenville) delivered RBI singles in the fourth to extend the Indian advantage to 3-0.
Austin Moyer (Greensboro, NC/SE Guilford HS/USC Upstate) hit a sacrifice fly in the sixth and Julio Zubillaga (China Grove, NC/Carson HS) squeezed home a final run for the Tribe in the ninth. Wil Huneycutt (Locust, NC/W. Stanly HS) tossed a perfect ninth to cap the win.
Hohn led Catawba at the plate, going 3-for-5 in the 13-hit attack. Dula, John Neese (Summerfield, NC/NW Guilford HS/Guilford Tech) and Brett Underwood (Greensboro, NC/SW Guilford HS) each provided two hits. Kevin Rufas had two of the four Newberry hits.
