Baseball Rolls On With Doubleheader Sweep At Newberry
NEWBERRY, SC -- Catawba continued to get solid pitching in sweeping a doubleheader from host Newberry in South Atlantic Conference baseball action on Saturday afternoon at the Smith Road Complex. The Catawba Indians won by the scores of 7-4 and 13-2 to improve to 19-5 overall and 11-1 in the SAC. The Wolves fell to 12-12 and 6-6.
Catawba rallied from a four-run deficit to take the opener. Newberry jumped on Indian starter JJ Jankowski (McMurray, PA/Peters Township HS/Miami,OH) in the first to take a 4-0 lead. After a hit batter and a sacrifice, Jovan Rohena doubled home a run and Chris Love followed with a two-run homer. Zach Morgan singled home the final run.
The Indians chipped away at the lead, scoring single runs in the second, third and fourth frames to cut the margin to 4-3. Keaton Hawks (Lexington, NC/E. Davidson HS) singled home a run in the second, Ryan Bostian (Kannapolis, NC/S. Rowan HS/Montreat) homered in the third and Brett Underwood (Greensboro, NC/SW Guilford HS) plated a run in the fourth.
Catawba pulled even in the sixth on an infield hit by Greg Lawson (Charlotte, NC/Providence HS) then took the lead with a three-run seventh. After infield singles by Chris Dula (Troutman, NC/S. Iredell HS) and Josh Hohn (Greensboro, NC/S. Guilford HS/N. Greenville), Austin Moyer (Greensboro, NC/SE Guilford HS/USC Upstate) singled home the go-ahead run with one out. Hawks and Underwood singled home the final two runs for the 7-4 lead.
Jankowski stifled Newberry after the opening inning, allowing just three more baserunners, as he improved to 4-0. He scattered six hits, walked one and fanned 10 in eight innings. The junior allowed leadoff singles in the fourth and fifth frames, but then retired the side. He walked the leadoff man in the eighth, but came back to strike out the final three batters he faced. Clay Watson (Davidson, NC/N. Davidson HS) earned the save, allowing just a two-out single in the ninth.
Three became the magic number for Catawba in the nightcap as the Indians scored three times in four separate innings to complete the three-game sweep. Dula knocked in six runs as he went 3-for-3, including a two-run homer to pace the offense.
Moyer delivered another quality start on the mound to improve to 4-1. He tossed five innings of one-hit ball, walking one and posting seven strikeouts. The junior gave up his run on a sacrifice fly by Love following a walk and a single with one out in the first.
Dula got things started with a two-out, two-run double in the first. He singled home another run in the second, which followed a two-run single by Cameron White (Columbia, SC/Ridge View HS). The Indians opened the lead to 9-1 in the third as the Tribe scored twice on wild pitches and another run when Dula was hit by a pitch to force home a run.
Dula capped his day with a two-run homer in the fifth. Kevin Parrish (Winston-Salem, NC/Glenn HS), who pinch hit for Dula in the sixth, singled home the final Catawba run.
Hawks and Underwood each had two-hit games in both outings of the doubleheader. Hohn scored two runs in each game, while Blake Houston (Mt. Ulla, NC/S. Rowan HS) scored three times in the night cap.
