Artem Claims Deep South Lacrosse Player of Week Honors
WINGATE, NC -- Catawba junior attack Braden Artem (Acton, Ontario, CANADA/Christ the King) has been named the Deep South Conference Offensive Player of the Week, league officials announced on Monday. Wingate senior Matt Ramsey (Philadelphia, PA) earned Defensive Player of the Week honors, while Saint Leo attack Matt Obermeyer (Winter Springs, FL) was the Freshman of the Week.
Artem helped 12th-ranked Catawba pick up a pair of conference wins on the week, racking up 12 goals and three assists in the two victories. He had four goals and an assist in the 12-7 win at Rollins. Artem followed by tying a school record with eight goals in the 21-15 win at Saint Leo. He also handed out two assists in the victory. Artem scored consecutive goals in the third to give the Indians a 13-12 lead then assisted on the next two to put Catawba on top 15-12 in the key DSC victory.
Ramsey helped the Bulldogs pick up a pair of conference victories last week. The 2010 All-DSC selection covered the opposing team’s leading scorer in all three contests on the week, holding the trio to a combined two goals. He allowed one goal to Jack Deaver of Rollins, one to George Proechel of Saint Leo, and held Lenoir-Rhyne’s Anthony Mangili scoreless.
Obermeyer netted eight goals for the Lions on the week, helping Saint Leo to a 1-1 record in conference play. He had a huge game in the victory over Wingate, notching six goals and two assists in the 11-8 win. Obermeyer added a pair of goals against Catawba. He also collected five ground balls on the week.
