Hester Belts Pair of Home Runs in Softball's Doubleheader Sweep of Lees-McRae
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba used a pair of big innings to sweep a doubleheader from visiting Lees-McRae in softball action on Wednesday afternoon at Whitley Field. The Catawba Indians won by the scores of 6-2 and 14-2 to improve to 16-10 overall. The Bobcats fell to 11-16.
The Lady Indians scored six times in the fourth inning of game one, while plating 11 runs in the opening inning of the game two victory. Both outbursts erased 1-0 deficits. Khourtni Hester (Waldorf, MD/McDonough HS) had the big bat as she homered in each game, while Carly Sabat (Warren, OH/Howland HS) collected four hits in the doubleheader.
Hester led off the fourth inning of the opener with a home run to pull Catawba even at one-all. The Lady Indians loaded the bases with one out and got a run when Lauren Lewis (Concord, NC/N. Mecklenburg HS) was hit by a pitch. Casey Baucom’s (Marshville, NC/Piedmont HS) single brought in two runs, while the final two runs scored on a wild pitch and a walk to Kayla Myers (Bryson City, NC/Swain Co. HS).
That big inning was more than enough support for starting pitcher Brittany Murray (Asheboro, NC/E. Randolph HS). The junior improved to 9-5, allowing five hits and striking out 10.
Murray struck out six over the first three frames and survived a rocky fourth. After an out on a leadoff line drive, the Bobcats strung together four straight singles to take the lead on a base hit by Anna Carter (Hurdle Mills, NC). Catawba avoided further damage as Murray posted a strikeout then got the final out on a line drive right at Sabat in centerfield.
Lees-McRae got a run back in the sixth on a home run by Kim Coley (Marion, NC), but that was the lone hit Murray allowed after the stretch of hits in the fourth. Coley had two hits for the Bobcats in the opener. Laurel Gregg (Mars Hill, NC) took the loss, striking out seven in five innings.
Lindsey Huntsinger (Asheville, NC) hit a two-out home run for Lees-McRae to give the Bobcats a 1-0 lead in the night cap, but the Lady Indians erupted in their half and never looked back. The first seven Catawba batters had hits which included two-run doubles by Alli Justice (Bishopville, NC/Decatur HS) and Tara Gibbs (Waynesville, NC/Tuscola HS). Hester capped the inning with a grand slam.
Emily Huneycutt (Locust, NC/W. Stanly HS) got the win for Catawba in game two. She allowed a run off three hits and struck out four. Sabat, Myers, Hester, Gibbs, Sami Santoli (Nesconset, NY/Smithtown West HS) and Connel Kelly (Tallmadge, OH/Tallmadge HS) all had two hits for Catawba in the nightcap as the Lady Indians pounded out 16 hits.
