Softball Upended By Carson-Newman in SAC Openers
JEFFERSON CITY, TN -- Bri Shoemake (Ooltewah, TN) accounted for six RBI as Carson-Newman swept a South Atlantic Conference softball doubleheader from visiting Catawba on Friday afternoon at the Lady Eagle Softball Complex. The Lady Eagles won by the scores of 10-2 and 5-2 to improve to 21-8-1 overall and 3-1 in the SAC. The Catawba Indians fell to 16-12 and 0-2.
In the opener, Mary Shealy (Clinton, SC) broke a 2-2 tie with a two-run home run in the fourth and the Lady Eagles never looked back as they cruised to a 10-2 victory. Shealy also earned the win in the circle as she surrendered just one earned run off six hits while posting three strikeouts in six innings of work.
After each team scored a run in the first, Catawba regained the lead in the third on a two-out double by Alli Justice (Bishopville, MD/Decatur HS). The Lady Eagles got a RBI double in the fourth from Kim Whaley (Maryville, TN) to tie the score before Shealy’s homer.
Carson-Newman added two more runs in the fifth then ended the contest with a four-run sixth. Amber Hewitt (Ringgold, GA) had a two-run single and Shoemake capped the win with a two-run double. The Lady Eagles tallied just seven hits with Shoemake picking up three RBI. Kayla Myers (Bryson City, NC/Swain Co. HS) had two of Catawba’s six hits.
In game two, Shoemake’s RBI double in the fourth provided the Lady Eagles with a 3-2 lead and C-N went on to post the 5-2 victory. Carson-Newman pounded out 10 hits in the contest, including two each from Shoemake, Shealy, Hewitt and Price. The Lady Indians managed just four hits, two more from Myers, including a solo home run.
Shealy, who improved to 18-6, tossed another win in the second game. She gave up one earned run and scattered four hits across seven innings of work. She also fanned four batters.
Myers put Catawba on the board first in the opening frame as she singled and then rounded the bases on a fielding error to give Catawba a 1-0 lead. The Lady Eagles tied the game in the second on a RBI single by Hewitt, but Myers responded for the Indians in the third with a solo blast to left field to give Catawba a 2-1 lead.
C-N added a run in each the third and fourth innings to take the lead for good. Shealy came through with a RBI double in the third and Shoemake gave C-N a 3-2 lead with the run-scoring double in the fourth. Shoemake gave the Lady Eagles a pair of insurance runs in the sixth with a two-run homer.
