Baseball Comes Up Short in Twin-Bill Losses at Anderson
ANDERSON, SC -- Host Anderson held off Catawba twice to claim a doubleheader sweep in South Atlantic Conference baseball action on Saturday afternoon at Memorial Stadium. The Trojans won by identical 3-2 scores to improve to 13-17 overall and 7-8 in the SAC. The Catawba Indians, ranked 21st in NCAA II, fall to 21-7 and 12-3.
In each game the Indians had the tying run at second in their final at bat, but could not get the run to the plate. In the opener, Jacob Saxon got Garrett Furr (Gold Hill, NC/Mt. Pleasant HS) to fly out to post his fifth save, while Erick Sanderson finished off a complete game when he induced a ground out by Ryan Bostian (Kannapolis, NC/S. Rowan HS/Montreat).
Neither team broke through in the opener until the sixth. Catawba loaded the bases with no outs, but was limited to just a single run which came on a double play ground out by Furr. Anderson struck right back in its sixth, benefitting from a pair Indian errors. Shawn Delmontagne broke the tie with a two-out, two-run triple.
Catawba would leave the bases loaded in the seventh, but rallied in the ninth with two outs. Austin Moyer (Greensboro, NC/SE Guilford HS/USC Upstate) singled home a run and Chris Dula (Troutman, NC/S. Iredell HS) followed with a single. Saxon then retired Furr on the fly out to center.
Anderson again used a three-spot in the game two win, scoring all its runs in the fifth. The first three Trojan batters reached with Zach Reeves driving home the first run. Blake May plated two more with a single.
Sanderson keep Catawba’s bats silent for six innings, but with one out in the seventh Dula singled and John Neese (Summerfield, NC/NW Guilford HS/Guilford Tech) doubled. Brett Underwood (Greensboro, NC/SW Guilford HS) drove in a run on a ground out and Furr singled home a second run with two outs. Jordan Kuhn (Lewis Center, OH/Olentangy HS) followed with a single, but Bostian grounded out to short to end the game.
Sanderson scattered seven hits and fanned six in the game two win, improving to 4-3. Moyer allowed the three runs on six hits and struck out five in falling to 4-2. JJ Jankowki (McMurray, PA/Peters Township HS/Miami,OH) dropped to 4-1 after the opening game loss for Catawba without allowing an earned run. He scattered six hits and posted seven strike outs in seven a third innings. Marsh Kowalski got the win with two hitless innings of relief.
