Softball Splits Doubleheader Shutouts With Mount Olive

SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba and visiting Mount Olive split a softball doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Whitley Field.  Mount Olive won the opener 4-0, while the Catawba Indians answered with their own 4-0 win in game two.  Catawba now stands at 17-13 overall, while the Trojans are 13-18.

The Lady Indians gained the split behind the work of freshman Emily Huneycutt (Locust, NC/W. Stanly HS), who allowed just three singles in hurling the shutout.  She allowed just four base runners and none before two were out in an inning.  Huneycutt posted three strikeouts and upped her record to 8-6.

Catawba got on the scoreboard in the second as Alli Justice (Bishopville, NC/Decatur HS) and Tara Gibbs (Waynesville, NC/Tuscola HS) led off the frame with consecutive doubles.  The duo combined to drive in a pair of runs in the third.  Justice got a run in on a squeeze bunt, while Gibbs singled home another.  Gibbs brought home the final run on a sacrifice fly in the fifth.

Huneycutt was in control and never let Mount Olive mount a threat.  After a two-out single in the first, the freshman sat down nine straight before a runner reached on an error in the fourth.  She allowed two-out singles in the sixth and seventh frames, but came right back to get the final out on the next hitter.

Gibbs had two hits and three RBI to lead the Catawba offense.  She doubled and tripled in the opener, providing two of the three Lady Indian hits.  Kayla Myers (Bryson City, NC/Swain Co. HS) scored a pair of runs for the Lady Indians in the nightcap.

In the opener, Carly White (Ash, NC) surrendered just three hits in tossing the shutout.  She walked one and struck out one in improving to 6-6.  She was backed by a 15-hit attack on offense led by Robbin Kennedy (Chesapeake, VA), who had three hits and three RBI.

Kennedy broke a scoreless tie in the fifth with a two-run homer.  Kassie Lowe (Stanley, NC) singled home a run later in the frame and Kennedy added a RBI double in the sixth for the final run.

Kelly Minshew (Statonsburg, NC), Aubrey Reinhard (Goldsboro, NC) and Kalie Smith (Roanoke Rapids, NC) each added a pair of hits in the win.  Kennedy and Lowe added a hit in the nightcap.
