Lacrosse Upsets #4 Merrimack on Tuohy's OT Winner

SALISBURY, NC -- Senior Marty Tuohy (Weymouth, MA/Weymouth HS) scored 33 seconds into overtime as host Catawba upset fourth-ranked Merrimack 12-11 in men’s lacrosse action on Monday night at Shuford Stadium.  The Catawba Indians improve to 7-1, while the Warriors fall to 3-1.

Catawba’s Casey Chinn (Mooresville, NC/Lake Norman HS) won the overtime face-off and the Indians called a timeout.  Tom Cullop (New Windsor, MD/S. Carroll HS) drove into the box and found Tuohy, who fired in the game-winner from the right side from 10 yards out.  Tuohy had three of his five goals after the third quarter, including two straight to tie the game at 10-all with 10:40 remaining.

The Indians jumped on top early as Cory Losselyong (Lewisville, NC/W. Forsyth HS) scored two goals in the opening three minutes.  Cullop scored twice in the final minutes of the first quarter and Tuohy his first to begin the second to give Catawba a 5-2 edge.

The Indians spent much of the early part of the second quarter a man down, drawing four penalties in the opening six minutes.  Merrimack used the advantage to pull even at the 8:08 mark after two goals from Terrence Barclay (Babylon, NY) and the tying one from Corey Lunney (Little Silver, NJ).  The teams were tied 7-7 at the break.

Lunney gave the Warriors a 10-8 lead early in the fourth quarter, but Tuohy struck twice in a span of 1:16 to pull Catawba even with 10:40 left.  Losselyong tallied a man-up goal at the 10:02 mark to put the Indians up 11-10 then Michael Balbuena (Falmouth, MA) forced overtime on a strike with 3:08 remaining.  Tuohy scored the winner less than a minute into the extra time.

Merrimack held a 51-34 edge in shots, including a 32-12 advantage at the half.  Catawba goalie Michael Pecchia (Coquitlam, BC, CANADA/Heritage Woods) kept the Indians in the game as he made 11 of his 17 saves in the opening 30 minutes.  Connor Reagan (East Lyme, CT) played all but 38 seconds in goal for Merrimack.  He made six saves and allowed 11 goals.

The Warriors also held a 42-25 edge in ground balls, although the Indians picked up 11 to just five for Merrimack after the third quarter.  Nick Maggio (Winchester, MA) won 16 of the 25 face-offs for Merrimack, but Chinn won four of the last six for the Indians.
