Lomascolo Shuts Down Brevard As #23 Baseball Opens Series With 6-1 Win

SALISBURY, NC -- Sophomore Nick Lomascolo (Mooresville, NC/Lake Norman HS) tossed a three-hitter and struck out a dozen as 23rd-ranked Catawba topped visiting Brevard 6-1 in South Atlantic Conference baseball action on Friday night at Newman Park.  The Catawba Indians improve to 23-7 overall and 13-3 in the SAC, while the Tornados fall to 11-18 and 3-12.

Lomascolo allowed a two-out home run in the first to Randy O’Dell (Durham, NC) as the only blemish of the night.  Brevard did threaten again in the sixth as the Tornados loaded the bases with one out on a hit batter and consecutive singles by Champ Stuart (Freeport, BAHAMAS) and Kramer Clark (Candler, NC).  Lomascolo got a foul out and a strikeout to end the frame.

After a leadoff walk in the seventh, Lomascolo sat down the final nine batters as he improved to 6-1 on the year.  He allowed the three hits, walked two and hit a batter while fanning a dozen men.

Catawba tied the game in the second on a two-out home run by John Neese (Summerfield, NC/NW Guilford HS/Guilford Tech) then took the lead on a two-out, two-run homer by Austin Moyer (Greensboro, NC/SE Guilford HS/USC Upstate) in the third.  The Indians would pad their lead in the seventh on a RBI single by Josh Hohn (Greensboro, NC/S. Guilford HS/N. Greenville) and a two-run single by Chris Dula (Troutman, NC/S. Iredell HS).

The Indians collected 11 hits, two each by Garrett Furr (Gold Hill, NC/Mt. Pleasant HS), Brett Underwood (Greensboro, NC/SW Guilford HS) and Julio Zubillaga (China Grove, NC/Carson HS).  Zubillaga scored a pair of runs.

Casey Smith (Kernersville, NC) took the loss for Brevard, falling to 2-6.  He went six and a third innings, allowing six runs off 10 hits with five strikeouts.  Dustin Haithcox (Asheboro, NC) finished up the game, allowing just the hit to Dula in an inning and two-thirds of work.  He walked one and fanned one.
