Pitching Shuts Down Belmont Abbey as #18 Baseball Takes 8-0 Win
BELMONT, NC -- Four Catawba pitchers combined to post an 8-0 shutout over host Belmont Abbey in a battle of nationally-ranked baseball teams on Tuesday afternoon at Abbey Yards. The Catawba Indians, ranked 18th in NCAA II, improve to 26-7, while the 21st-ranked Crusaders fall to 27-9.
John Tuttle (Kannapolis, NC/A.L. Brown HS) earned the win as he tossed five innings. He surrendered two hits, walked two and struck out three to improve to 3-1. Clay Watson (Lexington, NC/N. Davidson HS), Ross Whitley (Mooresville, NC/Lake Norman HS) and Wil Huneycutt (Locust, NC/W. Stanly HS) combined on four no-hit innings of relief.
Catawba struck for three runs in the fifth to take the lead. Brett Underwood (Greensboro, NC/SW Guilford NC) led off the frame with a walk and Blake Houston (Mt. Ulla, NC/W. Rowan HS) followed with a single. They would score on singles by Ryan Bostian (Kannapolis, NC/S. Rowan HS/Montreat) and Josh Hohn (Greensboro, NC/S. Guilford HS/N. Greenville). An infield single by Chris Dula (Troutman, NC/S. Iredell HS) drove in the final run of the inning.
The Catawba pitchers did the rest as no Crusader reached third during the day. The Indians padded their lead in the ninth with five runs, capped by a three-run homer by Garrett Furr (Gold Hill, NC/Mt. Pleasant HS).
The Indians out-hit Belmont Abbey 11-2 on the afternoon with Dula collecting three hits in five trips to the plate. Bostian, Hohn and Furr each had two hits. Justin Vasquez and Chris Vazquez had the hits for Belmont Abbey. Catawba also capitalized on four Crusader errors.
