Baseball Drops Series-Opener to Lenoir-Rhyne

SALISBURY, NC -- Lenoir-Rhyne scored a run in the ninth and knocked off host and 18th-ranked Catawba 4-3 in South Atlantic Conference baseball action on Friday night at Newman Park.  The Bears improve to 11-27 overall and 6-12 in the SAC, while the Catawba Indians fall to 26-8 and 15-4.

Nick Verhein (Charlotte, NC) scored from third on Chris LaVenia’s (Charlotte, NC) two-out, bloop single to left to give the Bears the lead.  Brian Padgett (Statesville, NC) got out of the ninth after issuing a two-out walk to improve to 3-2.  He worked out of trouble in the eighth as he got John Neese (Summerfield, NC/NW Guilford HS/Guilford Tech) to hit into an inning-ending double play with the bases loaded.

Catawba scored twice in the first inning to take the early lead.  Josh Hohn (Greensboro, NC/S. Guilford HS/N. Greenville) and Chris Dula (Troutman, NC/S. Iredell HS) hit consecutive doubles then Dula scored after a wild pitch and a passed ball.

Dan Catalona (St. Petersburg, FL) singled home Anthony Scully (Charlotte, NC), who led off the second with a double, to put Lenoir-Rhyne on the board.  Stephen Andrews (Winston-Salem, NC) put the Bears on top 3-2 as he led off the fifth and seventh frames with solo homers.  Catawba tied the game in the bottom of the seventh on a fielder’s choice by Julio Zubillaga (China Grove, NC/Carson HS) that plated Neese.

Padgett allowed no runs and walked three in his two innings of work.  He struck out two.  Christian Hicks (Charlotte, NC) started for the Bears.  He tossed seven innings, allowing seven hits and fanning five.  Scully joined Andrews with two hits for Lenoir-Rhyne.

Hohn and Neese each collected two hits for Catawba.  Wil Huneycutt (Locust, NC/W. Stanly HS) took the loss for the Indians to fall to 3-1.  He allowed just the one hit, but hit Verhein with one-out in the ninth.  Nick Lomascolo (Mooresville, NC/Lake Norman HS) went eight innings for the Indians.  He surrendered five hits, walked four and struck out four.
