Furr's Five RBI Sparks Baseball to Sweep of Lenoir-Rhyne
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba swept a South Atlantic Conference baseball doubleheader from visiting Lenoir-Rhyne on Saturday afternoon at Newman Park. The 18th-ranked Catawba Indians got five RBI from Garrett Furr (Gold Hill, NC/Mt. Pleasant HS) in an 11-4 win in game one, while the Indians limited the Bears to just two hits in taking the nightcap 5-2. Catawba improves to 28-8 overall and 17-4 in the SAC, while the Bears fall to 11-28 and 6-14.
Catawba jumped out to a quick lead in the opener. After three consecutive walks to open the home half of the first, Furr cleared the bases with a double on the first pitch he saw. Furr would score on a sacrifice fly by Brett Underwood (Greensboro, NC/SW Guilford HS). Furr drove in two more in the fourth on a bases-loaded single to give the Indians an 8-1 lead.
The Bears got three of their five hits in the sixth inning to close within 9-4. Brian Dice (Hickory, NC) and Anthony Sully (Charlotte, NC) had RBI in the frame. That was the only troublesome inning for Catawba starter JJ Jankowski (McMurray, PA/Peters Township HS/Miami,OH), who improved to 6-1. He worked eight innings and allowed just four hits.
Furr had three hits in the win, while Chris Dula (Troutman, NC/S. Iredell HS), Blake Houston (Mt. Ulla, NC/S. Rowan HS) and Julio Zubillaga (China Grove, NC/Carson HS) added two each. Ryan Bostian (Kannapolis, NC/S. Rowan HS/Montreat) scored three runs. Sully had two RBI for Lenoir-Rhyne.
Dice and Stephen Andrews (Winston-Salem, NC) plated runs in the first two innings of the nightcap to give the Bears a 2-0 lead. Catawba erased the deficit in the second as it scored twice without a hit. The Indians benefitted from four walks and a hit batter.
Josh Hohn’s (Greensboro, NC/S. Guilford HS/N. Greenville) two-out single plated Zubillaga in the fourth as Catawba went on top 3-2. The Indians added two insurance runs in the fifth. Furr led off with a double and John Neese (Summerfield, NC/NW Guilford HS/Guilford Tech) tripled. Neese scored on a double by Underwood.
John Tuttle (Kannapolis, NC/A.L. Brown HS) got the win in relief as he tossed three hitless frames and fanned three. Wil Huneycutt (Locust, NC/W. Stanly HS) notched his fifth save with a perfect seventh. Furr, Neese and Brett Holmgren (Middlesboro, NC/Coyle & Cassidy HS) each collected two hits in the win for the Indians.
