Myers Homers Twice as Softball Sweeps Newberry
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba hammered out five home runs as it swept a South Atlantic Conference softball doubleheader from Newberry on Saturday afternoon at Whitley Field. The Catawba Indians won by the scores of 7-5 and 7-2 to improve to 21-15 overall and 4-4 in the SAC. The Wolves fall to 13-20 and 2-6.
Kayla Myers (Bryson City, NC/Swain Co. HS) helped rallied Catawba to the opening win. The freshman tied the game with a solo home run in the fifth and put the Lady Indians on top with a two-run double in the sixth. She also homered in the game two win.
Newberry took an early lead in the opener as Chelsie Hilbourn (Loris, SC) connected on a two-run homer in the third. Felicia Taylor (Venice, FL) followed with a triple and Richelle Mirabal (Tampa, FL) doubled her home as the Wolves went up 3-0.
Carly Sabat (Warren, OH/Howland HS) homered for Catawba in its third and Amanda Terry (Cordova, NC/Richmond Senior HS) scored on a wild pitch as the Lady Indians cut the gap to 3-2. Myers then tied the game on lead-off homer in the fifth. Myers doubled home two with two outs in the sixth to give Catawba its first lead and Alli Justice (Bishopville, MD/Decatur HS) doubled home two more for a 7-3 edge.
The Wolves got two runs back in the seventh on a two-run single by Mirabal, but Emily Huneycutt (Locust, NC/W. Stanly HS) got the final out to grab the win. Huneycutt allowed two runs off five hits over four innings of relief.
Each team collected 10 hits in the opener. Catawba got two hits from Myers, Khourtni Hester (Waldorf, MD/McDonough HS) and Lauren Lewis (Concord, NC/N. Mecklenburg HS). Hilbourn, Mirabal and Amber Holley (Aiken, SC) had two hits for the Wolves.
Catawba scored four times in the first inning to grab control of the nightcap. Hester drove in the first run and Tara Gibbs (Waynesville, NC/Tuscola HS) added a two-run double. Gibbs stretched the lead to 5-0 with a home run in the third.
Hilbourn cut the Catawba lead to 5-2 on her second two-run shot of the day in the fifth, but Myers and Terry each hit solo shots for the Lady Indians to put the lead back to five runs at 7-2. Huneycutt hurled the complete game to improve to 11-7. She scattered eight hits and struck out four.
Sabat, Myers, Hester and Gibbs all had two hits for Catawba in game two. Taylor and Codi Kelly (New River, AZ) posted two hits for Newberry.
