Football wins home opener over Fayetteville State

SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba College, ranked 19th in the AFCA NCAA II Coaches Poll, defeated visiting Fayetteville State 27-14 on Saturday afternoon at Salisbury High Schoolís Ludwig Stadium. The Indians used two fourth down stands in the second half and returned an interception for a score to improve to 2-1 on the year. Fayetteville State falls to 2-1. The Tribe took an early lead on its first possession, marching 74 yards in 12 plays. Luke Samples (Elkin, NC) hooked up with Cedric Squirewell (Ridgeway, SC) from 21 yards out on a third-and-20 for a 7-0 lead. The Broncos failed on fourth down on its first drive, then raced 80 yards on four plays to even the score with 56 seconds left in the opening quarter. DeAngelo Bridgers ((Tarboro, NC) capped the drive on a 38-yard run. Catawba regained its advantage with just under four minutes to play in the half. Samples again converted a third and long, this time to O.J. Lennon (Greensboro, NC), also from 21 yards out for a 14-7 lead. The Broncos drove inside the Tribe 10 in the final seconds of the half, but freshman Samario Houston (Charlotte, NC) broke up a pass in the end zone on the final play of the half. After the break, Marcus Hicks (Oxford, NC) deflected a pass which was intercepted by Jamel Jackson (Concord, NC), who returned it 61 yards to give the Indians a 21-7 lead just 54 seconds into the second half. It was the second interception of the game for Jackson, who has four in three games. Fayetteville State wasted little time in closing the deficit as Kamal Watkins (Badin, NC) took the ensuing kickoff 94 yards to make the score 21-14at the 13:40 mark of the third quarter. Catawba came up with two defensive stops on fourth down on the next two Bronco possessions to stay in front. Richard Scott (Candor, NC) helped stop the Broncos on a fourth-and-one at the Tribe 13 and Houston made a stop for a loss on a fourth-and-six at the Catawba 30. Late in the third quarter, Allan Rohrbaugh (Lexington, NC) gave the Tribe a 24-14 cushion with a 40-yard field goal and added a 26-yarder with 10:44 remaining for the 27-14 advantage. The second kick came after an interception by Maurice Price (Charlotte, NC) at the Tribe 30. Houston recovered a Bronco fumble at midfield on the next FSU possession and Catawba ran out the final 5:39 of the game. Rodney Wallace (Bamberg, SC) led the Tribe ground game, totaling 115 yard for the second straight week. Samples was 19-of-32 passing for 276 yards and a pair of scoring tosses. During the win, Nick Means (Thomasville, NC) set the Catawba record for career receiving yards, now with 2,111. He broke Ike Hillís record of 2,089 yards set in 1969. Bridgers ran for 101 yards to lead the Broncos, while Duane Taylor (Greensboro, NC) completed 14-of-28 passes for 161 yards and was intercepted three times. Houston led the Tribe defense with 14 tackles, including two for losses, with a fumble recovery and a pass break up. Phil Crumb (Raleigh, NC) and Brian Holliday (Fayetteville, NC) each made 16 stops for Fayetteville State. #####
