Baseball Uses 12-Run Frame to Pound Wingate 20-7
WINGATE, NC -- NCAA Division II 21st-ranked Catawba used a 12-run second inning to roll to a 20-7 win over host Wingate in non-conference baseball action on Tuesday night at Christopher Stadium. The Catawba Indians delivered its highest run-scoring output of the season in improving to 29-8. The Bulldogs fell to 24-18.
The Indians trailed 2-0 after an inning, but erupted for the 12 runs to take command in the second. The first nine Catawba batters reached base to give the Tribe a 7-0 lead before an out was recorded. John Neese (Summerfield, NC/NW Guilford HS/Guilford Tech) led off with a single and scored on a wild pitch after the next two batters were walked. Brett Underwood (Greensboro, NC/SW Guilford HS) also raced home to tie the game on a wild pitch to tie the score.
Catawba’s bats took over then. Josh Hohn (Greensboro, NC/S. Guilford HS/N. Greenville) singled home two and Chris Dula (Troutman, NC/S. Iredell HS) followed with an RBI single. Consecutive Wingate errors led to another run before Ryan Bostian (Kannapolis, NC/S. Rowan HS/Montreat) and Hohn capped the frame with RBI doubles.
Joe Kase (Palm Harbor, FL/Tarpon Springs HS/S. Florida CC) got the start for the Indians, seeing his first action since a March 9 start at USC Aiken. The junior surrendered a two-run homer to Dodson McPherson in the first inning, but cruised after that behind Catawba’s offensive outburst. Kase (1-1) went six innings, allowing three runs off seven hits with three strikeouts.
Catawba finished with 19 hits and drew 10 walks. Blake Houston (Mt. Ulla, NC/S. Rowan HS) was among a trio of Indians to collect three hits. He went 3-for-4 with three RBI and three runs scored. Neese enjoyed a 3-for-5 night and scored three runs. Dula also went 3-for-4.
Catawba jumped up to #9 in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Poll.
