Men's Tennis Closes Out With 5-4 Win at Pfeiffer
MISENHEIMER, NC -- Catawba downed host Pfeiffer 5-4 in men’s tennis action on Wednesday afternoon at the Knapp Tennis Center. Freshman Matthew Nicholson (Chawara, ZIMBABWE/Lomabundi) won a third-set tiebreaker at #6 singles to help the Catawba Indians improve to 15-9 overall. The Falcons fall to 6-7.
Catawba won two doubles to lead 2-1 entering singles. Pfeiffer won at the top three singles slots, including a three-set victory by Johan de Wit at #2, to even the match at 4-all. De Wit rallied after losing the opening set in a tiebreaker to get the win.
Nicholson, who won the opening set, lost the second set in a tiebreaker to set up the dramatic finish. The freshman would again battle with Stephen Tyndel into a tiebreaker, but this time Nicholson would post the win by a 7-3 count to secure the winning point for Catawba.
Nicholson joined Tom McCormack (Winchester, ENGLAND/Symonds) as winners in both doubles and singles for the Indians. Philip Lawson and de Wit were double winners for Pfeiffer.
