Softball Stays Hot With Doubleheader Sweep At Mars Hill
MARS HILL, NC -- Catawba ran its win streak to six games as it posted a sweep of host Mars Hill in a South Atlantic Conference softball doubleheader on Thursday afternoon at Ponder Field. The Catawba Indians took the opener 7-2 then claimed a 2-1 victory in eight innings to complete the sweep. The Lady Indians improve to 25-15 overall and 8-4 in the SAC, while the Lions fall to 26-13 and 4-6.
Catawba pulled out the tight pitching matchup in game two in extra frames. Brittany Allen (Tobaccoville, NC/N. Forsyth HS) began the eighth on second base and moved to third on a ground out by Carly Sabat (Warren, OH/Howland HS). She then scored the eventual winning run on a ground out by Amanda Terry (Cordova, NC/Richmond Senior HS).
Mars Hill sacrificed its runner to third to open its eighth inning then Emily Huneycutt (Locust, NC/W. Stanly HS) came on and got the second out on a grounder to third. She would strike out Ashley McCurry to end the game and post her second save.
The Lady Indians took the lead in the first inning as Sabat led off with a double and scored on a single by Kayla Myers (Bryson City, NC/Swain Co. HS). Mars Hill got an unearned run on a sacrifice fly by Natalie Haithcox to tie the game in the fourth. The Lions also had two runners in scoring position in the fifth with one out, but Brittany Murray (Asheboro, NC/E. Randolph HS) worked out of the frame to keep the game tied.
Murray got the win to improve to 12-8. She went seven and a third innings and allowed just three hits and one unearned run. She walked none and had one strikeout. Taylor Morris took the loss for Mars Hill. She gave up eight hits and fanned five. Myers had the only multi-hit game with a pair of hits for Lady Indians.
Catawba took a quick lead in the opener as Tara Gibbs (Waynesville, NC/Tuscola HS) connected on a two-out, three-run homer in the first inning. Myers led off the third inning with a home run to stretch the lead to 4-0.
Huneycutt tossed four perfect innings to begin the game before Haithcox led off the fifth with a single. Jade Bullins followed with a home run to cut the Catawba lead in half. Mars Hill threatened in the sixth, but Huneycutt got out of a bases loaded jam with no outs without allowing a run.
With the momentum, Catawba scored three times in the seventh to pad its lead. Terry had a bunt single to plate Sabat, who had tripled, then Alli Justice (Bishopville, NC/Decatur HS) hit a two-run homer. Huneycutt finished off the complete game for her fourth straight win to improve to 13-7. She allowed two runs off four hits with no walks and a pair of strikeouts.
Justice and Sabat each had two hits for Catawba which out-hit Mars Hill 9-4. Terry and Justice each scored twice. Tara West had tossed four hitless innings of relief for the Lions before Catawba’s seventh-inning outburst. She would strike out five in five innings.
