Baseball Opens Carson-Newman Series With 9-4 Win
KODAK, TN -- Catawba rallied from an early deficit to claim a 9-4 win over host Carson-Newman in South Atlantic Conference baseball action on Friday night at Smokies Park. The Catawba Indians, ranked 21st in NCAA II, improves to 30-8 overall and 18-4 in the SAC. The Eagles fall to 17-23 and 13-9.
Jonathan Dalton doubled home a run in the first inning for Carson-Newman and the Eagles scored twice on bunts in the second frame to go up 3-0. Catawba got a run back in the third on a single by Garrett Furr (Gold Hill, NC/Mt. Pleasant HS) then the Indians plated five runs in the sixth to take over.
Brett Underwood (Greensboro, NC/SW Guilford HS) started the big Catawba inning with a one-out walk and scored on a single by Blake Houston (Mt. Ulla, NC/S. Rowan HS). After a walk and a fly out, Josh Hohn (Greensboro, NC/S. Guilford HS/N. Greenville) doubled home Houston to tie the game. Chris Dula (Troutman, NC/S. Iredell HS) singled two home to put Catawba on top then scored on a single by Furr for a 6-3 lead.
Catawba added a run in the seventh as Underwood scored on a ground out by Julio Zubillaga (China Grove, NC/Carson HS) and tacked on two in the eighth on a single by Austin Moyer (Greensboro, NC/SE Guilford HS/USC Upstate). That was enough for Nick Lomascolo (Mooresville, NC/Lake Norman HS), who went seven innings to improve to 7-1. He allowed two earned runs off five hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Clay Watson (Lexington, NC/N. Davidson HS) finished off the final two frames.
Furr led the Catawba bats with three hits and a pair of RBI. Underwood added two hits and scored twice. Hohn scored three times. Dalton reached base three times for the Eagles on a hit and two walks. Austin Bridgewater took the loss as he allowed six runs on seven hits over six innings. He posted five strikeouts.
