Baseball Grabs SAC Crown With Sweep of Carson-Newman

JEFFERSON CITY, TN -- Catawba claimed the 2011 South Atlantic Conference Baseball Championship as it completed a three-game sweep of host Carson-Newman on Saturday afternoon at the Silver Diamond Baseball Complex.  The Catawba Indians, ranked 21st in NCAA II, won by the scores of 7-2 and 8-3 to improve to 32-8 overall and 20-4 in the SAC.  The Eagles fall to 17-25 and 13-11.

Chris Dula (Troutman, NC/S. Iredell HS) hit two home runs and accounted for seven RBI in game two that clinched the league title.  He hit a three-run home run to tie the score in the fourth then connected on a grand slam for an 8-3 lead in the seventh.

Carson-Newman had taken an early 3-0 lead.  Lucas Mouton doubled a run home in the first then, in the third, Jonathan Dalton singled home a run.  Another run scored on a two-out error to give the Eagles a 3-0 lead.  Dula erased the deficit with one swing in the fourth.

John Tuttle (Kannapolis, NC/A.L. Brown HS) kept the Eagles off the board after the third and the Indians grabbed the lead in the sixth.  Dula doubled with one out and scored the go-ahead run on a two-out double by Austin Moyer (Greensboro, NC/S. Guilford HS/USC Upstate).

Wil Huneycutt (Locust, NC/W. Stanly HS) worked out of trouble after Carson-Newman’s first two batters of the sixth reached with a single and an error.  Huneycutt got a strikeout then a groundout to put men on the corners with two outs.  He struck out Lance Rorex to end the frame to keep Catawba on top then the Indians got the grand slam from Dula to pad the lead.

Tuttle got the win to improve 5-1 on the year.  He went five innings and allowed two earned runs off seven hits.  Huneycutt recorded his sixth save as he tossed the final two innings, surrendering one hit and striking out three.

Dula went 4-for-4 with seven RBI and scored three runs.  Ryan Bostian (Kannapolis, NC/S. Rowan HS/Montreat) and Josh Hohn (Greensboro, NC/S. Guilford HS/North Greenville) each scored twice.

JJ Jankowski (McMurray, PA/Peters Township HS/Miami,OH) was dominate in the opener.  The junior allowed just three hits and fanned 13 over his eight innings.  He upped his record to 7-1.

Garrett Furr (Gold Hill, NC/Mt. Pleasant HS) and Moyer singled home runs for Catawba in the first to stake Jankowski to an early 2-0 lead.  Dalton led off the Carson-Newman second with a home run, but that was all the Eagles could muster off Jankowski.

After the home run, Jankowski would strike out the side and added a stretch where he fanned six in a row starting with one out in the sixth.  Furr had another RBI-single in the third then Hohn pushed the lead to 6-1 with a three-run homer in the fourth.

Hohn drove home another run in the seventh to cap his 2-for-5 game with four RBI.  Furr joined Hohn with two hits as did Brett Underwood (Greensboro, NC/SW Guilford HS) and Blake Houston (Mt. Ulla, NC/S. Rowan HS).

The Indians wrap up the league crown with a weekend left on the schedule.  It marks the first title for Catawba since 2008, although the Indians did win the tournament championship in each of the last two seasons.  Catawba has won either a regular season or a tournament title in all but two years since 2002.
