Furr's Grand Slam Lifts Baseball Over USC Aiken

SALISBURY, NC -- Garrett Furr (Gold Hill, NC/Mt. Pleasant HS) hit a go-ahead grand slam in the fifth as 15th-ranked Catawba defeated visiting USC Aiken in baseball action on Wednesday night at Newman Park.  The Catawba Indians improve to 33-8 overall, winning for the 18th time in 21 games.  The Pacers fall to 23-17.

Catawba did all its scoring in the fifth inning to erase a 2-0 deficit.  The Indians loaded the bases with one out in the fifth on singles by Greg Lawson (Charlotte, NC/Providence HS), Julio Zubillaga (China Grove, NC/Carson HS) and Ryan Bostian (Kannapolis, NC/S. Rowan HS/Montreat).

The Pacers nearly got out of the jam, but were only able to get a force out at home on a ground ball to third by Josh Hohn (Greensboro, NC/S. Guilford/North Greenville) and Catawba made USCA pay.  Chris Dula (Troutman, NC/S. Iredell HS) beat out a grounder to third to get one run home then Furr connected on his grand slam for a 5-2 lead.

Aiken trimmed the lead to 5-3 on a single by Kyle Rice (Augusta, SC), but the Indians got a double play ball to end the frame.  The Pacers threatened again in the eighth as two runners reached with two outs, but USCA could not get a run home.

Joe Kase (Palm Harbor, FL/Tarpon Springs HS/S. Florida CC) improved to 2-1 for Catawba as he went six innings, allowing three runs on five hits with three strikeouts.  Nathan Furr (Albemarle, NC/W. Stanly HS) tossed the final three innings to grab his first save.  He surrendered just two hits and fanned two.

USCA took the lead in the second.  The first run scored on a wild pitch with two outs and Stephen Bellantoni (Oviedo, FL) singled home the second run.  Rice had two hits to lead the Pacers at the plate.  Jason Cochcroft (Gilbert, SC) threw three one-hit innings to start the game for USCA, but the Indians touched up Ryan Milewski (West Boylston, MA) for six hits and five runs.

Catawba collected 11 hits on the night.  Bostian, Dula, Furr, Lawson and Blake Houston (Mt. Ulla, NC/W. Rowan HS) each had two hits for the Indians.
