Lacrosse Claims Deep South Tournament Title With Fourth Quarter Rally

SAINT LEO, FL – Catawba scored three unanswered fourth-quarter goals and rallied for a 10-8 win over Florida Southern to claim the 2011 Deep South Conference Men’s Lacrosse Tournament Championship on Sunday afternoon at University Field on the Campus of Saint Leo University.  It marked the first tournament title for the Catawba Indians after three finals losses.  Catawba improves to 12-3 overall, while the Moccasins fall to 8-7.

Down 8-7 after three quarter, Catawba freshman John Scheich (Waxhaw, NC/Weddington HS) scored at the 13:08 to tie the game then added the go-ahead goal five minutes later.  The Indians kept FSC off the board during the quarter with Michael Pecchia (Coquitlam, BC, CANADA/Heritage Woods) posting four of his 13 saves in the final stanza.  Braden Artem (Acton, Ontario, CANADA/Christ the King), who was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, scored an insurance goal with 2:39 remaining on an assist from Scheich.

Catawba grabbed the quick lead as freshman Trevor Sieracki (Austin, TX/Anderson HS) scored twice in the opening six minutes for a 2-0 edge.  Florida Southern would score three straight goals to go on top before Sieracki scored again in the final minute of the quarter to tie the game at 3-all.

The teams traded goals early in the second quarter before Marty Tuohy (Weymouth, MA/Weymouth HS) put Catawba back up with 7:15 left in the half.  Scheich upped the lead to 7-5 before a late goal by Kevin Naslonski sent the teams to the break with the Indians holding a 7-6 edge.

Corey Brown notched his third goal of the game to pull Florida Southern even two minutes into the second half and Mat Thompson put the Moccasins on top at the 5:33 mark of the quarter.  That would be the final goal for FSC and Catawba rallied in the final quarter to grab the win.

Scheich had five points for Catawba with three goals and two assists.  Sieracki had three goals and Tuohy added a pair.  Pecchia totaled 13 saves for the Indians.  Brown led Florida Southern with three goals, while Hopper and Naslonski each had two goals and an assist.  Andrew Almansberger had eight saves for the Moccasins.
