Softball Pounds Lincoln Memoial to Finish Third in SAC
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba swept a South Atlantic Conference softball doubleheader from visiting Lincoln Memorial on Sunday afternoon at Whitley Field. The Catawba Indians claim third place in the SAC after the 8-0 and 9-2 wins. The Lady Indians improve to 29-17 overall and 12-6 in the SAC, while the Lady Railsplitters fall to 25-23 and 6-12.
Catawba pounded out 25 hits in the doubleheader victories. Carly Sabat (Warren, OH/Howland HS) and Lauren Lewis (Concord, NC/N. Mecklenburg HS) each had five hits in the double dip, while Mollie Kovalcin (Latrobe, PA/Greater Latrobe HS) had four. Sabat tripled in each game and totaled five RBI, while Lewis had a double, triple and homer in game two.
Sabat got things rolling for Catawba in the opener as she drove in three with a triple in the second inning. Khourtni Hester (Waldorf, MD/McDonough HS) added a three-run homer in the fifth to up the lead to 7-0. Hester had two hits and four RBI in the opener. Kayla Myers (Bryson City, NC/Swain Co. HS) had three hits and ended the contest with a RBI double in the sixth.
Emily Huneycutt (Locust, NC/W. Stanly HS) picked up the win to improve to 16-8. The freshman allowed seven hits, walked none and struck out nine. Brittany Stuive had two hits for Lincoln Memorial.
Catawba’s bats stayed hot in game two. Lewis tripled with two outs in the second and scored on a single by Kovalcin. Sabat drove her in with a hit and the Lady Indians led 2-0 after two. Tara Gibbs (Waynesville, NC/Tusculum HS) hit a solo home run in the third, the first of her two in the game, for a 3-0 edge.
Stuive got a run back for the Lady Railsplitters with a solo home run to open the LMU fourth, but Catawba struck back for two runs on a single by Kovalcin and a triple by Sabat for a 5-1 lead. Gibbs had a two-run homer in the fifth and Lewis hit a solo shot to increase the Lady Indian lead to 9-2.
Sabat, Lewis, Gibbs and Kovalcin all had three hits in game two. Lewis scored three times. Brittany Murray (Asheboro, NC/E. Randolph HS) earned the win to improve to 13-9. She allowed five hits and struck out one.
