Furr Named SAC Baseball Player of the Week
ROCK HILL, SC -- Catawba’s Garrett Furr (Gold Hill, NC/Mt. Pleasant HS) has been named the South Atlantic Conference Baseball Player of the Week for the week ending April 17. Wingate’s Ben Currie earned league Pitcher of the Week honors. It was announced by conference officials on Monday.
Furr, a sophomore designated hitter, hit .533 for the week and smashed two grand slams to help Catawba to four wins on the week to run its winning streak to 10 games. Trailing 2-1 to USC Aiken, Furr connected on a two-out grand slam to put the Indians on top 5-2. He added another grand slam in the 13-0 vicotory against Tusculum in Friday’s series opener.
In the first of Saturday’s doubleheader, Furr led off the eighth with a solo home run that sparked a four-run inning that brought Catawba back from an 8-5 deficit. Furr had hits in all four wins for the Indians on the week. He hit three home runs and collected nine RBI while scoring five runs. Furr raised his season average to .333. He leads the team with nine home runs and has totaled 46 RBI.
Currie, a freshman from Clemmons, NC, went six innings to pick up the win against Brevard. Currie struck out seven and allowed two hits. After a leadoff double in the second, Currie retired the next 12 batters before walking his only batter of the night. He lowered his season ERA to 2.76.
