FOREST CITY, NC -- Newberry knocked off top-seeded Catawba 4-2 in the opening game of the 2011 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Baseball Tournament on Wednesday afternoon at McNair Field.  The win improves the Wolves to 23-25 on the year, while the 13th-ranked Catawba Indians fall to 36-9.  The Indians will face an elimination game on Thursday at noon.   The sixth-seeded Wolves with play at 3:45 pm.

Newberry did all their damage in the early innings and with two outs.  After Catawba had grabbed a 1-0 lead on a Chris Dula (Troutman, NC/S. Iredell HS) home run in the first, the Wolves answered in the second.  Jovan Rohena doubled with two outs and scored on a two-run homer by Evan Darr.

The Indians were able to tie the game in the second, but got only one run out of a bases loaded, no out situation.  Blake Houston (Mt. Ulla, NC/S. Rowan HS) got the run in on a fielder’s choice.  Stranding runners would plague Catawba the rest of the way.

The Wolves again struck with two outs in the third.  John Fogarlie and Chris Love drew walks and Sanchez Gartman delivered a double to right center to give Newberry its 4-2 lead that held up the rest of the way.

The Indians put a runner in scoring position with one out in both the fourth and fifth innings, but failed to score.  Catawba would load the bases with two outs in the seventh and eighth frames, but again could not plate a run.

Mario Rojas earned the win for Newberry to improve to 5-2.  He went seven and a third innings, allowing two runs on just three hits.  He walked five and struck out five.  Tyler Sturkie picked up his seventh save as he allowed just one hit over his one and two-thirds innings of work.

Nick Lomascolo (Mooresville, NC/Lake Norman HS) suffered his first loss since his initial start of the season, falling to 8-2.  He went the distance and allowed only three hits.  He walked two and fanned six.  Josh Hohn (Greensboro, NC/S. Guilford HS/North Greenville) had two of the four Catawba hits.
