Softball Picks Up Win in SAC Tournament Opener

JEFFERSON CITY, TN -- Third-seeded Catawba opened play at the 2011 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Softball Tournament with a 5-0 win over Mars Hill at the Lady Eagle Softball Complex on Wednesday afternoon at Carson-Newman College.  Alli Justice (Bishopville, MD/Decatur HS) led the way for Catawba going 2-for-2 with a triple and home run.  The Catawba Indians improve to 30-17, while the Lions, seeded sixth, fall to 29-20.

Justice scored twice and tallied three RBI in the victory to back the shutout by freshman Emily Huneycutt (Locust, NC/W. Stanly HS).  Huneycutt improved to 17-8 with her eighth shutout.  She allowed five hits, walked two and struck out one.

Justice got Catawba on the board in the bottom of the first.  Following an error and a double by Kayla Myers (Bryson City, NC/Swain Co. HS), the junior tripled in two for the early lead.  Tara Gibbs (Waynesville, NC/Tuscola HS) followed with a single, scoring Justice, to up the margin to 3-0.

Huneycutt got out of a bases-loaded jam in the third then did not allow a Mars Hill hit the rest of the way.  Catawba added to its lead in the fifth as Justice homered with two outs.  The Lady Indians added three more singles in the frame with Lauren Lewis (Concord, NC/N. Mecklenburg HS) plating Gibbs for the final run.

Justice and Gibbs each had two hits for the Lady Indians.  Seventeen of the 21 outs recorded by Huneycutt were on ground balls with two more on infield pop ups.  Ashley McCurry had two hits for Mars Hill.
