Baseball Stymied By UNC Pembroke

SALISBURY, NC -- Brad Bridgeman (Laurel Hill, NC) went 4-for-4 with three doubles and Joe Mangum (Charlotte, NC) clubbed a pair of home runs to lead 15th-ranked UNC Pembroke to a 10-3 win over host and 11th-ranked Catawba in baseball action on Thursday night at Newman Park.  With the win, the Braves improve to 37-10, while the Catawba Indians fall to 39-11.

Catawba scored a pair of runs in the first inning to take a 2-0 lead.  Ryan Bostian (Kannapolis, NC/S. Rowan HS/Montreat) led off with a single and Josh Hohn (Greensboro, NC/S. Guilford/North Greenville) followed with a triple to put the Indians on top.  Hohn scored on a sacrifice fly by Chris Dula (Troutman, NC/S. Iredell HS).

UNC Pembroke came right back.  Mangum hit a solo home run to open the second and Jason Coker (Charlotte, NC) tied the game when his sacrifice fly plated Bridgeman, who reached when he was hit by a pitch.

The Braves scored an unearned in the fourth on a bases loaded walk to Keith Whitman (Elkin, NC).  Catawba answered with its own unearned run as Garrett Furr (Gold Hill, NC/Mt. Pleasant HS) came home on a ground out by Brett Underwood (Greensboro, NC/SW Guilford HS).

UNC Pembroke broke the game open in the fifth.  Mangum connected on a two-run homer and Josh Haley (Fayetteville, NC) singled home two more for a 7-3 edge.  The Braves stretched its lead on solo homers by Whitman in the sixth and Haley in the seventh.

Brian Willis (Hope Mills, NC) settled down after giving up the two opening hits.  Although he walked three, Willis did not allow another hit until Dula singled to start the Catawba sixth.  He would improve to 6-3, tossing six innings and allowing four hits with seven strikeouts.  Braxton Lewis (Seven Springs, NC) notched his eighth save by going the final three innings.  He surrendered two hits, walked two and fanned four.

Haley added three hits and four RBI to the UNCP offense, while Mangum also had three hits and three RBI.  Bostian collected two of Catawba’s six hits.  Nick Lomascolo (Mooresville, NC/Lake Norman HS) took the loss for the Indians.  He fell to 8-3 as he allowed seven hits and walked five, working into the fifth.
