Late ASU Goals Spoil Upset Bid by Men's Soccer
BOONE, NC -- The Catawba Indians men's soccer team began the 2011 season on the road Thursday night at the Appalachian State Soccer Stadium and fell 3-0 to the Mountaineers. ASU evened its record at 1-1.
Appalachian State got on the board in the 16th minute when forward Sekani Sinclair received a through-ball into the penalty box from Nicholas Skoda and struck it home from 15 yards out.
ASU went into halftime with a 1-0 lead and seven shots on goal while Catawba had just two.
The Mountaineers put the game away late in the second half with two goals about two minutes apart. Sinclair netted his second of the match with an assisted ball off a counter-attack in the 80th minute for a 2-0 lead. Still reeling, the Indians went down three goals in the 82nd minute off of Skoda’s second assist, this time a cross to Sean Dreybus for the final score.
The Indians had four corner kicks in the second-half, three in a row at one point, but could not capitalize.
Catawba finished the game with six shots, with three on goal. ASU peppered the visitor’s net with 18 shots, 13 on goal.
Goalkeeper Evan Harvey (Apex, NC/Apex HS) had ten saves between the posts and Domhnall Minogue (Greystones, IRELAND/Presentation HS) had two shots for the Indians.
Catawba will host Conference Carolinas foe Mount Olive for the 2011 home opener in its second annual “White Out at the Frock” on Saturday, September 3 at 7:00pm.
