Football Falls to St. Augustine's in Opener

DURHAM, NC -- St. Augustine’s used a strong second half to top visiting Catawba 30-5 in football action on Saturday afternoon at Durham County Stadium.  The Falcons scored three third-quarter touchdowns to pull away after a tight first half.  St. Augustine’s evens its mark at 1-1, while the Catawba Indians drop their opener.

Teddy Bacote went 12-of-18 through the air for 159 yards and three scores to pace the Falcons.  Jamian Smith hauled in nine passes for 118 yards and a pair of scores.  Jacob Charest (Charlotte, NC/Butler HS) completed 26-of-51 passes for Catawba for 192 yards, but was intercepted four times and sacked twice.  Neither team managed much offense on the ground as the Indians totaled 42 yards with St. Augustine’s finishing at a minus-24.

St. Augustine’s held Catawba scoreless over the first half and led 9-0 at the break.  Smith produced the lone touchdown of the opening half with a 40-yard catch from Joaquin Green at the 8:45 mark of the opening quarter.  The point-after was missed, but Michael Lima added a 30-yard field goal with 3:07 to go in the half for the margin at the break.

Catawba got a break early in the second half as Damien Lee (Reidsville, NC/Reidsville HS) forced a fumble on a sack that was recovered by Tra Ingram (Browns Summit, NC/NE Guilford HS) at the Falcon seven.  The Indians were only able to cash it in for a field goal by Thomas Trexler (Wilmington, NC/New Hanover HS) from 21 yards out.

The Falcons answered back with a five-play drive that covered 58 yard and was capped by a Bacote eight-yard pass to Brian Richards.  Two possessions later, after an interception by Chaz Robinson, Bacote connected with Smith from 26 yards to up the lead to 23-3 with 5:17 left in the third quarter.  Another interception led the final Falcon points late in third quarter on a 17-yard pass from Bacote to Tyron Laughinghouse.

The Indians got their final points in the fourth quarter when snap on a punt sailed out of the end zone.  The Falcons finished with 272 total yards and committed two turnovers.  Catawba tallied 234 yards and suffered four miscues.

Shonquez Nelson had two of the four interceptions for St. Augustine’s, forced a fumble and added a pair of sacks among his eight tackles.  Cory Johnson (Fayetteville, NC/Britt HS) made 11 tackles for Catawba.
