Volleyball Rolls Past Pfeiffer in Three Sets

MISENHEIMER, NC -- Catawba posted a sweep of host Pfeiffer in volleyball action on Tuesday night at Merner Gym.  The Catawba Indians won by the scores of 25-18, 25-17 and 25-19 to improve to 4-1 on the season.  The Falcons fall to 3-1.

Kaitlyn Whitmer (Ferrum, VA/Franklin Co. HS) led Catawba with 11 kills with Savannah Tomlinson (Rensenburg, NY/Westhampton Beach HS/UNCG) adding eight kills and a pair of blocks.  Libero Jenny Young (Roanoke, VA/Patrick Henry HS) recorded 21 digs, while setter Jordan Raye (Boonville, NC/Starmount HS) dished out 29 assists.

Pfeiffer led the opening set 11-6 before a kill by Whitmer gave the serve to Raye.  The junior helped Catawba post nine straight points to erase the deficit and push the Lady Indians on top at 15-11.  Raye had an ace and a kill in the run, while Whitmer added three more kills.  The Falcons pulled with 18-16, but Denise Grissom (Stokesdale, NC, Rockingham Co. HS) served up two aces in a run that pushed Catawba to a 23-17 edge.  Whitmer killed off the final point of the set.

Catawba jumped out quickly in set two.  Aces by Young and Grissom helped stake the Lady Indians to a 10-5 edge.  Three kills from Whitmer upped the lead to 16-7 and the junior would again kill off the set point.

A pair of kills by Taylor Doss (Boonville, NC/Starmount HS) and another by Carson Brewer (Raleigh, NC/Middle Creek HS/Cape Fear CC) gave Catawba a 10-8 lead in the final set.  Pfeiffer twice closed within a point, but could never reclaim the lead.  A pair of aces by Cate Glendenning cut the Catawba margin to 21-19, but after and error, Grissom served an ace and Brewer had a kill to bring the Lady Indians to match point.  A Pfeiffer error led the winning point.

Grissom tallied four aces for Catawba and also reached double figures in digs with 12.  Raye had 11 digs and also posted four kills.  Alli Parish (Zebulon, NC/Smithfield-Selma HS) collected five kills and had three blocks.

Kelly Lancellot had six kills to lead Pfeiffer.  Glendenning had three aces and 16 assists.  Jordan O'Bryant delivered 10 digs and both Lancellot and Kelsey Blauser recorded three blocks.
