Volleyball Wins Two Matches on Saturday
JEFFERSON CITY, TN -- Kaitlyn Whitmer (Ferrum, VA/Franklin Co. HS) and Shay Meeks (Kings Mountain, NC/Kings Mountain HS) helped the Catawba volleyball team to a pair of wins on Saturday afternoon at Holt Fieldhouse. The Catawba Indians opened with a 25-20, 25-23, 25-17 South Atlantic Conference win over host Carson-Newman then claimed a 25-15, 25-18, 24-26, 25-17 win over Converse. The Lady Indians improve to 6-2 overall and even their SAC mark at 1-1.
Whitmer led Catawba with 16 kills in the league win over host Carson-Newman. Meeks chipped in with 10 kills and libero Jenny Young (Roanoke, VA/Patrick Henry HS) recorded 27 digs. Setter Jordan Raye (Boonville, NC/Starmount HS) handed out 33 assists, served up three aces and added a dozen digs, while Alli Parrish (Zebulon, NC/Smithfield-Selma HS) and Taylor Doss (Boonville, NC/Starmount HS) each collected three blocks.
In the opening set, kills by Parrish and Emily Richardson (Salem, VA/Salem HS) helped Catawba to an early 6-3 edge. A kill by Raye pushed the Lady Indians up 15-11. Catawba stretched the margin to 21-14 after an ace by Raye and a kill by Whitmer then won the set on a kill by Parrish.
Meeks had a pair of kills to help the Lady Indians to a quick 7-1 lead in the second set. Carson-Newman would rally back and cut the deficit to 9-8 following a kill by Rachel Bowen. Catawba stayed in front using three Lady Eagle errors and a kill by Whitmer for a 13-8 edge. C-N would draw even at 22-all on a combo block by Nikki James and Ashley Ferris, but Parrish killed off a point to give the Lady Indians a 23-22 lead. Whitmer served an ace to give Catawba a set point and after a kill by Ferris, Meeks put down the final point.
Three kills from Whitmer and an ace by Raye got Catawba off to a 5-0 lead in the final set. Whitmer’s ace made it 8-2 before the Lady Eagles battled back to even the set at 12-apeice on consecutive blocks by James. Two kills from Whitmer and another Raye ace started a nine-point run that pushed the Lady Indians back up 22-13 and Catawba put the match away on a combo block from Parrish and Richardson.
Meeks hit at 65% in the win over Converse. The senior posted 18 kills with just one error in 26 swings. Richardson also reached double figures with 11 kills and added three blocks. Parrish and Raye split setting duties, recording 28 and 26 assists, respectively. Young recorded 27 digs.
Catawba moved out to an early 9-4 lead in set one and pulled ahead 15-10 after a kill by Meeks. Converse trimmed the deficit to 15-13, but consecutive kills by Haley Lanier (Burgaw, NC/Pender Co. HS) sparked the Lady Indians, who closed set with a 10-2 run that was capped on a pair of aces by Raye. Lanier had a couple of early kills to help Catawba to another 9-4 edge in set two. The Lady Indians never led Converse back into the set, grabbing a 19-11 lead after a kill by Richardson.
The Valkyries built a 20-12 bulge in set three, but saw Catawba stage a late rally. Richardson capped a 7-1 run with back-to-back kills to cut the Converse lead to 21-19 and a Richardson block put the Lady Indians up 24-23. Converse regrouped, getting kills from Anna Williams and Jameiha Maxwell before an error by Catawba to take the set.
Catawba came back in the fourth set. Consecutive kills by Savannah Tomlinson (Rensenburg, NY/Westhampton Beach HS/UNCG) and an ace by Richardson gave the Lady Indians a 14-7 edge. Converse closed within 16-12, but Meeks kills off two points and the Lady Indians went on to claim the match.
