Football Hangs Tough in 20-3 Loss to I-AA Coastal Carolina
CONWAY, SC -- The Catawba defense slowed down Coastal Carolina, but the offense could not cash in on several trips deep inside Chanticleer territory in a 20-3 loss in football action on Saturday night at Brooks Stadium. Coastal Carolina improves to 2-0, while the Catawba Indians fall to 0-2.
The Indian defense limited CCU to 308 total yards and a mere 13 on the ground, while causing three turnovers. The unit also kept the hosts off the scoreboard in the final half. The Catawba offense failed to score on three trips into the Coastal red zone and scored its lone points on a Thomas Trexler (Wilmington, NC/New Hanover HS) 38-yard field goal with 3:28 left in the first quarter.
The Chanticleers blocked Catawba’s initial punt and took over at the Tribe 14, but were only able to muster a field goal as Grant Clayton cashed in from 26 yards away. After the teams traded punts, Coastal forced a Catawba fumble at midfield and Aramis Hillary tossed a 52-yard strike to Matt Hazel for a 10-0 lead.
Coastal Carolina answered the Catawba field goal with another scoring drive as Hillary ran in from three yards out on a third down play and a 17-3 advantage. The game’s final points came with 5:35 to go in the half after the Chanticleers had converted on fourth down after facing a third-and-24 situation.
Catawba stopped one CCU drive deep in Indian territory early in the third quarter when CJ Barksdale (Simpsonville, SC/Hillcrest HS) caused a fumble. Catawba forced a fumbled on a punt at midfield and drove to the Coastal 13 before coming up empty on a fake field goal. The Indians would drive inside the CCU 25 midway through the fourth quarter, but could not convert on fourth down.
Jacob Charest (Charlotte, NC/Butler HS) completed 21-of-31 passes for 165 yards in the loss for Catawba and was sacked three times. Nate Charest (Charlotte, NC/Butler HS) was his favorite target as his brother caught eight passes for 102 yards. Josh Wright (Raeford, NC/Hoke Co. HS/W. Carolina) ran for 56 yards and had six receptions. He needs 15 yards to reach 1,000 career rushing yards.
Hillary threw for 220 yards for Coastal, completing 16-of-24 passes. David Duran made three catches for 61 yards and Akeem Wesley made four receptions. Jeremy Height was the top ground gainer as he finished with 17 yards.
Cory Johnson (Fayetteville, NC/Britt HS) made nine tackles for the Indian defense. Johnson, Tra Ingram (Browns Summit, NC/NE Guilford HS), Lakeem Perry (Louisburg, NC/Louisburg HS) and Damein Lee (Reidsville, NC/Reidsville HS) were all in two stops for losses. Andre Jacobs led CCU with nine tackles.
