Volleyball Rallies Past Tusculum in Five Sets
Young sets school mark with 55 digs
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba rallied back to take the final three sets to claim a grueling five-set match over visiting Tusculum in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Saturday afternoon at Goodman Gym. Libero Jenny Young (Roanoke, VA/Patrick Henry HS) set a school record with 55 digs in the 22-25, 22-25, 30-28, 25-20, 15-12 victory. With the win, the Catawba Indians improve to 9-2 overall and 4-1 in the SAC. The Pioneers fall to 9-3 and 2-2.
Catawba turned around an early deficit in the third set and went up 14-8 on a kill by Kaitlyn Whitmer (Ferrum, VA/Franklin Co. HS). The Lady Indians still led 21-17 when the Pioneers rallied. Tusculum fought off two sets points before a kill by Ashley Sarmiento Dayton, OH) and an ace by Bailee Price (Fort Wayne, IN) gave the Pioneers at match point at 27-26.
Whitmer staved off two Tusculum match points with kills before an attack error by the Pioneers gave Catawba another set point. A combo block from Taylor Doss (Boonville, NC/Starmount HS) and Alli Parrish (Zebulon, NC/Smithfield-Selma HS) gave Catawba the set.
Catawba got a pair of blocks by Emily Richardson (Salem, VA/Salem HS) for a 9-6 lead in the fourth set and moved ahead 18-14 on a kill by Whitmer. Doss and Whitmer had kills to keep Catawba up 23-19. A hitting error would even the match at two-sets each.
Shay Meeks (Kings Mountain, NC/Kings Mountain HS) took over for Catawba in the fifth set. Consecutive kills put Catawba up 4-3. She notched her fifth kill of the set to put the Lady Indians on top 7-5. Doss had two kills to help the Lady Indians pull out to a 12-7 advantage and another kill by Meeks pushed the margin to 14-10. A combo block from Meeks and Richardson completed the Catawba comeback.
Meeks finished with 22 kills and four blocks for Catawba. Whitmer added 16 kills and 17 digs. Setter Jordan Raye (Boonville, NC/Starmount HS) dished out 54 assists and posted 17 digs. Richardson tallied eight kills and game-high six blocks.
Price and Natalie Gaudreau (Venice, FL) each posted 13 kills for Tusculum. Price also added 28 digs. Sam Underwood (Muncie, IN) added 12 kills, 14 digs and four blocks, while libero Caitlyn Dean (Fort Wayne, IN) collected 36 digs. Sarmiento handed out 49 assists.
