Football Gets First Touchdown, But Falls to Newberry 21-13

SALISBURY, NC -- Newberry Bryan Ehrlich (San Antonio, TX) threw three touchdown passes to lead the Wolves to a 21-13 victory over host Catawba in South Atlantic Conference football action on Saturday night at Shuford Stadium and Kirkland Field.  The Wolves improve to 1-2 overall and 1-0 in the SAC, while the Catawba Indians fall to 0-3 and 0-1.

After Catawba grabbed the initial lead on a 24-yard field goal by Thomas Trexler (Wilmington, NC/New Hanover HS), Livingstone used good field position to take the lead on a 22-yard pass from Ehrlich to Jason Livingston (Conway, SC).  The Wolves marched 87 yards on its next possession to go on top with 6:19 left in the half on an eight-yard pass from Ehrlich to Brandon Bostick (Florence, SC).

Catawba trimmed the lead to 14-6 at the half as Trexler converted on a 28-yard field goal.  The Indians had a field goal try early in the third quarter, but after holding Newberry on downs, Jacob Charest (Charlotte, NC/Butler HS) connected on a 67-yard pass to Nate Charest (Charlotte, NC/Butler HS) to cut the score to 14-13.  It marked the first touchdown by the Indians this season.

The Indians missed on a long field try in the fourth quarter and Newberry responded with a five-play, 69-yard drive take a 21-13 lead with 5:13 remaining.  Ehrlich connected with Bostick from 10 yards out for the score.  Catawba drove to the Newberry 11-yard line, but Charest was intercepted by David Davis (Columbia, SC) at the goal line.  The Indians had one final chance, but Charest was hit on fourth down and 18 from his own 31 yard line and fumbled.

Alkeem Sherman (Conway, SC) led Newberry on the ground with 45 yards as the Wolves racked up 80 yards rushing.  Ehrlich went 19-of-33 through the air for 211 yards and the three scores.  Livingstone and Bostick each had five receptions.

Catawba managed 44 yards on the ground with Josh Wright (Raeford, NC/Hoke Co. HS/W. Carolina) totaling 32.  Charest completed 14-of-33 passes for 254 yards.  Nate Charest caught six passes for 172 yards.
