Volleyball Beaten by #16 Wingate

WINGATE, NC -- Catawba was swept by host and 16th-ranked Wingate in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Tuesday night at Cuddy Arena.  The Bulldogs extended their winning streak in regular-season SAC matches to 69 in a row as they improved to 9-0 overall and 5-0 in the SAC with the 25-17, 26-24 25-14 victory.  The Catawba Indians fell to 9-3 and 4-2.

The Bulldogs jumped out quickly in the opening set and never trailed.  Midway through the first set, Wingate used a 6-1 run, aided by an ace from Grace Krauser and two kills from Cory McGowan, to go up 21-13.  The Bulldogs hit at 25% in the opening set to just 5% for Catawba.

The Lady Indians put up a valiant effort in the second set which would not see the teams separated by more than two points after a 3-0 start by Catawba.  Wingate scored three points of its own to tie things up and the back-and-forth battle was on.  Catawba led 23-21 following an ace by Alli Parrish (Zebulon, NC/Smithfield-Selma HS), but the Bulldogs reeled off three straight points to get to a set point.  Krauser had a kill and assisted on two blocks in the run.

Emily Richardson (Salem, VA/Salem HS) was able to pull Catawba even at 24-all before a Krauser kill gave Wingate another set point.  An attack error on the Lady Indians gave Wingate the 2-0 lead.

Catawba could not respond in the third set.  Three aces by Susie Marach in an early 8-0 run by Wingate gave the Bulldogs an 11-4 edge.  The Lady Indians had just six kills in the final set with six hitting errors.  The Bulldogs hit at 25% once again.

Kaitlyn Whitmer (Ferrum, VA/Franklin Co. HS) led the Lady Indians with 10 kills.  Libero Jenny Young (Roanoke, VA/Patrick Henry HS) collected 18 digs.  Krauser led Wingate with 12 kills with McGowan adding 11.  Liz Willis handed out 40 assists.
