Volleyball Takes Down Brevard in Three Sets
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba picked up a win over visiting Brevard in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action, sweeping past the Tornados on Saturday afternoon at Goodman Gym. The Catawba Indians improve to 10-3 overall and 5-2 in the SAC with the 25-10, 25-23, 25-15 victory. Brevard falls to 3-8 and 0-5.
Senior Shay Meeks (Kings Mountain, NC/Kings Mountain HS) paced the Lady Indians with 15 kills, while Kaitlyn Whitmer (Ferrum, VA/Franklin Co. HS) added 11. As a team, Catawba hit at 44% for the match with setter Jordan Raye (Boonville, NC/Starmount HS) handing out 28 assists. Whitmer and libero Jenny Young (Roanoke, VA/Patrick Henry HS) each registered 14 digs.
Erin Rollins (Murphy, NC) led Brevard with 11 kills and two blocks. Bethany Stevenson (Prattville, AL) dished out 18 assists and collected five digs.
Catawba dominated the opening set, hitting a 53% to just 9% for the Tornados. A kill by Whitmer and an ace by Denise Grissom (Stokesdale, NC/Rockingham Co. HS) gave the Lady Indians a 10-4 edge. A service run by Whitmer covered seven consecutive points to up the margin to 20-7. The surge included three kills each from Alli Parrish (Zebulon, NC/Smithfield-Selma HS) and Savannah Tomlinson (Rensenburg, NC/Westhampton Beach HS/UNCG). Raye killed off the final point.
Brevard led most of set two. Ashley Morrison (Denver, CO) delivered a kill to put the Tornados up 10-5. Rollins killed off a point for a 12-8 edge and another kill from Morrison had Brevard up 17-14. Catawba reeled off four straight points to take its first lead of the set after a kill by Whitmer and an ace by Raye.
Rollins put Brevard back up 21-20, but Raye recorded two kills to give Catawba a 22-21 edge. An attack error gave the Lady Indians a 23-21 lead then Rollins killed a point to reduce the margin to a point. Raye added another kill for a 24-22 edge then later killed off the set point.
Whitmer and Parrish had back-to-back kills for a 10-7 Catawba lead as the Lady Indians started to pull away in the final set. Meeks had consecutive kills to push the margin to 14-8. Two more kills from Meeks saw Catawba take a 20-10 advantage. Freshman Haley Lanier (Burgaw, NC/Pender Co. HS) killed off the final point.
Parrish added eight kills, two blocks and a dozen assists for Catawba. Tomlinson posted three blocks with Raye added seven kills.
