Men's Soccer Falls in SAC Opener to Mars Hill
SALISBURY, NC -- Mars Hill claimed a 3-1 win over host Catawba in South Atlantic Conference men’s soccer action on Sunday afternoon at Frock Field. The teams battled through a steady rain and a lightning delay with the Lions improving to 5-2 overall and 2-0 in the SAC. The Catawba Indians fall to 3-5 and 0-1.
Mars Hill scored the lone tally of the first half. Stephen Bivens (Douglasville, GA) scored off a feed from Alex Mullen (Adelaide, AUSTRALIA) just 10 minutes into the action. The teams waited out a 30 minute delay for lightning after 15 minutes and once resuming neither team could score before the halftime break.
Catawba struck for the equalizer just four minutes into the second half. Carson Smith (Mooresville, NC/Mooresville HS) slid a ball through the box that found its way inside the far post. Mars Hill retook the lead just before the hour as Regis Mawire (Harare, ZIMBABWE) weaved past the Indian defense and fired in a shot from the top of the box.
The Lions added a final goal 10 minutes before time on a strike from Giovanni Malnati (Guayaquil, ECUADOR). Zac Scott (Pittsboro, NC) picked up four saves in goal for Mars Hill. Evan Harvey (Apex, NC/Apex HS) recorded eight saves for Catawba. Mars Hill held a 19-6 edge in shots.
