Late free kick sinks Women's Soccer at Lenoir-Rhyne

HICKORY, NC – Catawba College fell to host Lenoir-Rhyne 2-1 in South Atlantic Conference women’s soccer action on Tuesday afternoon at Bears Field. Lenoir-Rhyne improves to 7-1-2 overall and 2-1-1 in the SAC, while Catawba falls to 6-2-1 and 2-1-1. Both teams entered ranked in the Southeast Region as Catawba entered in a tie for fourth, while the Bears were eighth.Lenoir-Rhyne scored the game-winner on Colleen Regan’s 30-yard free kick with just over two minutes to play. The kick was perfectly placed into the upper back corner just out of the reach of Catawba keeper Kim Clayton (Haw River, NC). Clayton made seven saves on the day off 11 L-R shots, while Bear keeper Julie Crosby stopped 11 of 14 Lady Indian attempts. The Bears had opened the scoring at the 30 minute mark on a deflection by Hali Robinson. Catawba would get the equalizer in the 75th minute on a header by freshman Kyley Thompson (Hagerstown, MD) off a cross by Megan Mainer (Raleigh, NC). It was Thompson’s seventh goal of the year, giving her the team lead.
