Women's Soccer Drops SAC Opener in OT
SALISBURY, NC--Catherine Watkins-Banks scored in the second overtime period to push Mars Hill to a 2-1 victory over Catawba in the Lady Indian’s South Atlantic Conference opener Sunday afternoon at Frock Field. The loss sends Catawba to 1-6 overall and 0-1 in the SAC.
Mars Hill improves to 5-3 and 1-1. Down 1-0 at halftime, Catawba forced the extra session on a goal in the 77th minute. Karen Presnell (Salisbury, NC/Salisbury HS) sent a through ball past Lion defenders which found its way into Erinn Wescoat’s (Egg Harbor, NJ/Absegami HS) path in the center of the field. Wescoat dribbled into the box and sent her shot to the left corner of the net just over the goalkeeper for the equalizer.
Mars Hill struck first in the 30th minute on a Lindsey Ingwersen breakaway goal from Watkins-Banks.
Catawba held a 13-6 shot advantage, but could not capitalize on several goal scoring opportunities.
The Lady Indians continue their home stand on Wednesday, Sept. 28 hosting SAC rival Wingate at 7:00 pm.
