Hawkins' 18 kills helps Volleyball to win over PresbyterianSALISBURY, NC – Catawba College won the final three games and defeated visiting Presbyterian in four games in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Tuesday night at Goodman Gym. Catawba sophomore Heather Hawkins (Troutman, NC) recorded a career high 18 kills to lead the Lady Indians to a 28-30, 30-16, 30-26 and 30-20 win. Catawba improves to 11-4 overall and 4-1 in the SAC, while Presbyterian falls to 9-8 and 4-1. Presbyterian, who entered as the SAC co-leader, jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the opening game, but Catawba used a nine-point run to grab a 19-12 advantage. The Lady Indians held a 24-17 edge before Debbie Tamosaitis (Lexington, SC) served the Lady Blue Hose in front. She had three aces and a kill in an eight-point surge to give PC a 25-24 lead. The game was tied three times from that point, the last at 28-28 following a kill by Catawba’s Hope Miller (Newton, NC). A service error gave the Lady Blue Hose a game point and Lindsay Mitchell (Chapin, SC) converted a kill for the 30-28 win. Consecutive aces by Rachel LaRoche (Wilmington, DE) staked Catawba to a 14-5 edge in the second game. PC closed to within 17-13, but a seven-point Lady Indian run, led by a pair of combo blocks by LaRoche and Elizabeth Hewitt (Hickory, NC) gave Catawba a 24-13 lead. Hawkins would kill the final point in a four-point run to end the game. The third game was tight throughout. Catawba went ahead 9-5 and later led 18-13 after an ace by Crystal Bonner (Yadkinville, NC). Presbyterian rallied back and took a 23-22 on a kill by Mitchell. A kill and block by Crissi Harrison (Hickory, NC) put Catawba on top 25-23 and the Lady Indians stayed in front, winning the final three points in the 30-26 win. The Lady Indians jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead in the deciding game and pushed the advantage to 20-10 after three consecutive kills by Hawkins and a combo block by LaRoche and Harrison.
