Late Goals Propel Lenoir-Rhyne Past Women's Soccer
HICKORY, NC -- The Lady Indians held a 1-1 draw deep into the second half against nationally ranked Lenoir-Rhyne, but gave up two goals six minutes apart to drop a 3-1 South Atlantic Conference decision to the Bears at Moretz Sports-Athletic Complex. Lenoir-Rhyne stays atop the SAC standings at 9-1 and 4-0, Catawba falls to 1-8 overall and 0-3 in the SAC.
The Lady Indians struck first off a penalty kick in the 21st minute. Alyssa Retundie (Mooresville, NC/Lake Norman HS) beat the Lenoir-Rhyne keeper to put Catawba up 1-0. The lead did not last long as Carley Griffin scored the equalizer in the 33rd minute for the Bears sending the teams into halftime tied at one goal apiece.
The Catawba defense held tight well into the second half until Jessica Schob and Laura Linehan produced goals for Lenoir-Rhyne at the 77th and 83rd minute marks.
Lindsay Webster (Hopkinton, MA/Hopkinton HS) made eight saves for the Lady Indians as they were outshot 25-4 by the Bears.
Catawba is in action again on Saturday, Oct. 8 at 5:00 pm hosting Carson-Newman at Frock Field.
