NEWBERRY, SC -- Newberry dropped the opening set, but claimed the final three in a four-set win over visiting Catawba in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Friday night at Eleazer Gym.  The Wovles won the match 15-25, 25-18, 25-19 and 26-24 to improve to 9-9 overall and 2-6 in the SAC.  The Catawba Indians fall to 11-5 and 5-3.

Newberry served up 10 aces in the match, included five by Samantha Parrish, who also posted a match-high 15 kills.  She also collected 14 digs.  Lauren Prachar joined Parrish with a double-double, recording 10 kills and 18 digs.  Lindsey Hollingsworth had 23 digs and Jessica King provided four blocks.

Kaitlyn Whitmer (Ferrum, VA/Franklin Co. HS) matched Parrish with 15 kills and added eight digs for Catawba.  Setter Jordan Raye (Boonville, NC/Starmount HS) handed out 36 assists, while providing 12 digs and five kills.  Libero Jenny Young (Roanoke, VA/Patrick Henry HS) had 27 digs and served up a pair of aces.

Catawba jumped out quickly in the opening set.  An early run that included a kill and an ace by Whitmer had the Lady Indians up 5-1.  Newberry pulled within 11-9, but Catawba responded with four straight points for a 15-9 lead.  Up 17-14, the Lady Indians scored eight of the last nine points, while included a block and three kills from Whitmer.

Newberry stormed out in set two scoring the first four points which included a pair of Amanda Soper's dozen kills on the night.  The Wolves build a 6-4 lead to 20-9 before a late Catawba rally.  The Lady Indians went on 9-2 run to close within 22-18 before the Wolves persevered, taking the set on an ace by Parrish.

The third set was tied at 9-all when Newberry got a pair of aces from Prachar and a pair of kills from Madison Schultz to race out to a 15-9 lead.  Two kills by Soper and an ace by Hollingsworth brought the margin to 18-10.  Whitmer tried to bring Catawba back with three late kills to draw Catawba within 22-18, but Newberry held on.

After leading early at 5-2, Newberry had to fight back from a deficit in set four.  Down 17-14, Newberry used two kills from Prachar around a pair of Catawba errors to retake the lead at 18-17.  The Lady Indians bounced back to lead 22-20 after a kill by Taylor Doss (Boonville, NC/Starmount HS), but the Wolves pulled even on a Prachar ace then won the match on consecutive kills by Parrish.
