Volleyball Falls After Tough Battle With #15 Wingate
SALISBURY, NC -- Wingate ran its streak of consecutive South Atlantic Conference volleyball wins to 74 with a four-set victory over host Catawba on Tuesday night at Goodman Gym. The 15th-ranked Bulldogs won the match 20-25, 25-17, 25-19 and 25-20 to improve to 19-0 overall and 10-0 in the SAC. The Catawba Indians fell to 12-6 and 6-4.
Anna Hilton (Hickory, NC) led Wingate with 16 kills, 15 digs and four blocks. Cory McGowan (Pittsburgh, PA) added 13 kills and three solo blocks. Libero Maggie Malone (Chicago, IL) registered 24 digs and setter Liz Willis (Raleigh, NC) handed out 46 assists.
Catawba was led by Kaitlyn Whitmer (Ferrum, VA/Franklin Co. HS), who had 13 kills and 13 digs. Alli Parrish (Zebulon, NC/Smithfield-Selma HS) added 10 kills and 15 digs. Libero Jenny Young (Roanoke, VA/Patrick Henry HS) collected 31 digs, setter Jordan Raye (Boonville, NC/Starmount HS) provided 35 assists and Emily Richardson (Salem, VA/Salem HS) posted six blocks with nine kills.
Catawba got out quickly and took set one, hitting at nearly 32%. An early run that included an ace by Whitmer and three kills by Parrish pushed the Lady Indians up 7-3. Wingate rallied to take a brief 15-14 edge following a kill by Susie Murach (Burke, VA), but Catawba answered with six straight points for a 20-15 lead. Whitmer killed off the final two Catawba points to end the set.
McGowan had an ace and a kill, while Kelsey Handel (Knoxville, TN) posted consecutive kills as Wingate pulled away from a 7-7 tie to lead 12-8 in set two. The Bulldogs later added a five-point run to up the margin to 19-11. Willis was able to kill of the set point.
Wingate rolled in set three, moving out to a 17-7 lead after a kill by Willis. Wingate stretched the lead to 23-12 following a kill by Lexi Potter (North Liberty, IA) before Catawba rallied late. McGowan finally killed off the set after a 7-1 Catawba run.
The Bulldogs again surged in the middle of set four. Behind four kills from Handel, Wingate turned a 6-5 deficit into a 16-7 lead. Potter put the Bulldogs up 18-10, but Catawba wouldn’t go quietly, reeling off seven of the next 10 points to pull within 21-17. Handel, Potter and Hilton had kills down the stretch as the Bulldogs held on.
After the strong start, Catawba hit just 9% over the final three sets. Wingate hit 21% for the match to 14% for the Lady Indians. Potter added nine kills and four blocks for the Bulldogs with Handel also recording nine kills. Stephanie Tassone (Chicago, IL) served up three aces.
