Whitmer's 16 Kills Paces Volleyball to Sweep of LMU
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba cruised to a three-set sweep over visiting Lincoln Memorial in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action Friday night at Goodman Gym. The Catawba Indians won by the scores of 25-18, 25-17 and 25-16 to improve to 13-6 overall and 7-4 in the SAC. The Lady Railsplitters fall to 13-4 and 8-3.
Junior Kaitlyn Whitmer (Ferrum, VA/Franklin Co. HS) led Catawba. She posted 16 kills, hitting at 40%, while adding six digs, two aces and two blocks. Shay Meeks (Kings Mountain, NC/Kings Mountain HS) provided nine kills and two aces. Setter Jordan Raye (Boonville, NC/Starmount HS) handed out 35 assists, with 10 digs.
Blaire Fowler (Fort Worth, TX) collected 10 kills for LMU and added 11 digs. Brittany Pugh (Farmersburg, IN) served up a pair of aces and dished out 16 assists.
Catawba rebounded from a slow start in the opening set. The Lady Indians trailed 5-1 and 7-2 before rallying. Taylor Doss (Boonville, NC/Starmount HS) pulled Catawba even at 12-all during a 5-0 run. Whitmer served an ace to put Catawba up 13-12 and Meeks ended the spurt with a kill for a 14-12 lead. Emily Richardson (Salem, VA/Salem HS) had consecutive kills to help Catawba build a 21-15 edge during a 7-1 run that propelled the Lady Indians to the set win.
LMU was able to build an early lead in set two as well, but Catawba fought back midway through. Down 11-8, the Lady Indians tied the set and took the lead at 14-13 on back-to-back kills by Meeks. The Lady Railsplitters pulled even at 16-all, but Raye and Alli Parrish (Zebulon, NC/Smithfield-Selma HS) had kills to spark a 6-0 run that was capped on consecutive combo blocks from Doss and Whitmer. Whitmer killed off the final two points.
Catawba never trailed in set three. LMU pulled even at 3-3 on a kill by Fowler, but the Lady Indians responded on a kill by Whitmer and led the rest of the way. Meeks had four kills in a stretch that saw Catawba move from a 12-9 lead to a 20-12 edge. Lincoln Memorial got within 22-16, but Whitmer had two kills to end the match.
