Bless' Bomb Sends Women's Soccer Past Lincoln Memorial in OT
HARROGATE, TN -- Sophomore midfielder Athena Bless (Asheboro, NC/SW Randolph HS) scored late in the second overtime to help propel Catawba College over Lincoln Memorial University 1-0 at the LMU Soccer Field on Saturday afternoon. Catawba’s third straight win pushes their record to 4-8 overall and 3-3 in the South Atlantic Conference. Lincoln Memorial’s record drops to 5-6-2 and 1-3-1 in the SAC.
With the game about to end in a scoreless tie, Bless catapulted a shot from 22 yards out in the 108th minute. The perfectly placed ball just made it past the out-stretched fingertips of Railsplitter goalkeeper Kayla Hanson for the game-winner and Bless' timely first goal of the season. Senior defender Jessica LeRoux (Ajax, ONT, CANADA/Archbishop O'Connor HS) made a game saving tackle for Catawba just a minute prior to help setup the dramatic finish.
The Lady Indians were out-shot by the Railsplitters 16-13, while Catawba had six corners to LMU’s three.
Alyssa Retundie (Mooresville, NC/Lake Norman HS) had the assist on Bless’ goal as Lindsay Webster (Hopkinton, MA/Hopkinton HS) made seven saves in net.
The Lady Indians will host Wingate on Tuesday, Oct. 18 at 7:00 pm in a rescheduled game from Sept. 28.
