Football wins SAC opener over Presbtyerian

SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba College, ranked 17th in NCAA II, rolled up 5116 total yards and won its South Atlantic Conference opener 27-14 over visiting Presbyterian in football action on Saturday afternoon at Salisbury High School’s Ludwig Stadium. The Indians had 299 yards on the ground and 217 through the air as they improved to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in the SAC. Presbyterian falls to 3-2 and 0-1. Presbyterian held Catawba on its opening possession, then marched 80 yards in 10 plays to take a 7-0 lead. Nick Harris (Loris, SC) completed 5-of-6 passes in the drive for 60 yards and accounted for the score on a one-yard run. Catawba would get the first of four field goals from Allan Rohrbaugh (Lexington, NC) with three minutes left in the opening quarter to trim the deficit to 7-3. Early in the second quarter, Rodney Wallace (Bamberg, SC) raced 64 yards to put Catawba on top for good at 10-7. Wallace led the Tribe ground attack with 153 yards on 15 carries. Rohrbaugh added another field goal on the next possession to give the Indians a 13-7 lead and both teams threw interceptions in the end zone to end the half. The Indians held a 340-201 edge in yardage at the half with Wallace gaining 130 of his 153 yards. The Indians also benefited from four Presbyterian turnovers. Ryan Norman (Norcorss, GA) came up with his second interception of the day to open the second half for Catawba and Luke Samples (Elkin, NC) tossed a 17-yard score to Nick Means (Thomasville, NC). Samples connected on a two-point conversion to John Vernon (Walnut Cove, NC) for a 21-7 lead with 8:20 remaining in the third quarter. Rohrbaugh added two field goals before a late Blue Hose touchdown brought the score to 27-14. Following Wallace, Corey Ready (Aiken, SC) ran for 53 yards, Samples had 50 and Mario Crowe (Charlotte, NC) had 48. Samples went 23-of-45 through the air for 217 yards. Cedric Squirewell (Ridgeway, SC) had nine catches for 81 yards, while Means added seven for 80. Presbyterian was held to 80 yards on the ground, 29 coming on a touchdown run by Greg Witt (Palmetto, FL) with 24 seconds to play. Harris finished the day 15-of-27 for 123 yards, but was intercepted twice. The Blue Hose had four interceptions and two fumbles on the day to just one pick for Catawba. #####
