Second Half Goals Send Bulldogs Past Women's Soccer
SALISBURY, NC -- Wingate scored twice in the second half to hand Catawba a 2-0 South Atlantic Conference setback Tuesday night at Frock Field. The defeat drops the Lady Indians to 4-9 overall and 3-4 in SAC, while the Bulldogs up their record to 11-2 and 6-0.
The game was played in steady rain throughout most of the match with a scoreless first half.
Wingate scored just two minutes into the second stanza off a corner from Kelly Adams. After the loose ball was knocked around, AJ Lightbody booted it towards the Catawba goal line which was cleared by Lady Indian Erinn Wescoat (Egg Harbor, NJ/Absegami HS). Play continued for roughly 15 seconds until the linesman conferred with the referee and called it a goal, putting the Bulldogs up 1-0.
Catawba responded with its best chance on goal in the 58th minute when Juliana Conte (Hampton, ONT, Canada/Holy Trinity Catholic HS) forwarded a cross to Alyssa Retundie (Mooresville, NC/Lake Norman HS) which one-timed it from the near post nine yards away into the waiting arms of Bulldog goalkeeper Ashlyn Hardie.
Another Bulldog set piece would bite the Lady Indians once more in the 74th minute as a well-placed Adams corner found the head of teammate Jade Montgomery for the 2-0 lead.
Catawba produced just two shots against a Wingate defense that has not allowed a goal in conference play. Lindsay Webster (Hopkinton, MA/Hopkinton HS) contributed nine stops in goal for Catawba.
Catawba travels to Greeneville, TN on Saturday, Oct. 22 for a pivotal SAC matchup with rival Tusculum at 2:00 pm.
